The Liverpool & Manchester Railway is frequently identified as the first modern railway but dates to 1830 and hence there is no contemporaneous photographic record. OpenSim is being used to model parts of the railway and adjacent areas based on maps, artworks and related information sources. The presentation outlines progress to date and addresses use of non-player characters (NPCs) in adding additional value to the simulation.

The Sad Sorry State of Weapons Development
Where: OSCC Keynote 2
When: 8 years ago [11 Dec 2016 17:30 SLT]

A cluster of bugs (all recorded in the OpenSimulator Mantis system) makes it difficult to script weapons in Open Simulator. Weapons are important to many different role-play communities. I will describe several methods that have been used to implement weapons, and how OpenSimulator could be improved to support them better. My goal is to generate excitement in the developers to fix some bugs critical to this disused corner of our communities.

Gamify Virtual Learning
Where: OSCC Keynote 2
When: 8 years ago [11 Dec 2016 08:30 SLT]

Join Dr. Larysa Nadolny in a discussion of how to use the motivating and engaging features of games in designing a learning activity in the virtual world. She will give examples on how to use challenges, leaderboards, easter eggs and more!

The Educational Robotics for STEM project, funded by the European Commission, aims to develop a continuous framework for the design of educational robotics activities for all children aged 7-18, both in and out-of-school, regardless of current interest in STEM subjects. In this presentation we explore the development of virtual robots (SLurtles) and the virtual environment in which children will explore, test and extend their understanding of mathematics and programming, through collaborative, constructioni

Google Maps and Panoramas in Immersive VR Environments
Where: OSCC Keynote 2
When: 8 years ago [10 Dec 2016 09:30 SLT]

We present our approach for enabling users to inject Google maps and geo-located panoramic views into virtual training environments. These virtual environments can be created by users through point and click operations. We believe that by mixing 3D virtual content with real world geo-located visual cues, trainees are able to translate more easily any skill or knowledge they acquire during their virtual training.

Beyond the Viewer - the Future of World Interfacing
Where: OSCC Keynote 2
When: 8 years ago [10 Dec 2016 12:00 SLT]

Worlds on the web, discussing new access devices and haptics, plus the future of interfacing with virtual worlds and 3D/VR immersive spaces. Open Simulator, its forks and especially the hypergrid represent years of content, community and a compelling prototype for a formative “metaverse”, but as new players and platforms emerge, are we ready to push for a place in the accelerating scheme of online participatory environments?
