Situated on the eastern bank of the Nile River, Hermopolis was the capital of the 15th nome of Upper Egypt and a place of devotion to Thoth, the deity associated with magic, writing, and wisdom. As a hub of scholarship, the city boasted the renowned "Mansion of Thoth" temple complex. In antiquity, Hermopolis held great cultural and religious significance, playing a pivotal role in shaping the beliefs and mythology of ancient Egypt. Presently, the remnants of this once-great city can be discovered in close proximity to the modern settlement of El Ashmunein.
