FreshVirtualWorld's response was very helpful for the conversation loool actually, his response unfortunately shows that some people just don't engage their thinking and react badly without specific reasons and in a stupid way. For example, if Europe makes a specific law for metaverses, Opensimulator will fall under it, but Fresh demonstrates how low the intellectual level of some people is lol.

Some people are just sensitive about certain subject matter. Has nothing to do with their level of intelligence, just what triggers them emotionally.

I can understand people's sensitivity, but I don't think his comment and reaction are justified.

The post is quite clear, and there are valid comments and responses, even emotionally. The concern is legitimate, and in the post, there are a series of questions. What does blocking someone have to do with this post? He should have expressed his thoughts, but instead, he clearly stated, 'SL is SL, OS is OS, I'll block anyone who talks about SL in this place, you're the first!' I believe it has little to do with his 'noble' mood; it's just a silly comment since the topic of any new laws to regulate the metaverses would apply to all of us who inhabit them.

In addition, he behaves even more foolishly and questionably by unblocking blocked individuals to respond and then blocking them again (hahaha, amusing but ridiculous). This behavior reflects on the quality of actions of this person, which is why his comments will be deleted, always.

It's the result of cancel culture. My last name is aptly named based on how many times I was for over 25+ years of internet experience.I see Fresh's point though that this website should be focused on OpenSim and not toxic SecondLife which is just ONE GRID, though the one that started it all and most famous. I personally indulge in payback and block woketards proactively since it was done to me for years.

However I do think you are partly right OpenLife about fresh's reaction being a bit overboard and hasty. But everyone wanted cancel culture and got it, now they are against it?

One thing I am sick of in life is saying "I told you so" so many freaking times. But alas, it applies again.

I asked a question, and you provided an answer; this is the right way to interact. Thank you for your responses.

My fear is that specific laws regarding metaverses and their control will also affect OS, obviously, and all open, even domestic, grids.

If people don't control they're grids right they deserve whats coming to them. Sadly it may effect opensim as well. This is why some people close off their grids to HG cause of crap like this. I think private grids are ok the ones paying for server. It'll be hard to attract players to your grid privately but then again, I guess we will have to see. I think OS will still be around but will be bound by rules by the government. I just dont get people today and allowing sex child crap! OS needs a strict policy in place. I also think Fred (dreamgrid) should do up a policy to protect himself from these predators. Hes created a software to allow us users to create grids and many take advantage and allow child avatars sex w/child avatars. However Fred should charge for his software which includes upgrades. This will or can eliminate those pesky predators. (I think) I believe each grid owner should have a strict policy about child avatars, I'm gonna do one myself to protect myself and members. have it so your grid owners can use the members IP and send it to the local authorities, sounds like alot but its worth it to protect yourself and others.

Possibly. But that makes a large assumption that many of the claims made in the original Medium article are/were true. Personally, I think the fact that the article was pulled and written under a pen name have to make many of the allegations questionable. I think it was hit job by someone who had an axe to grind, but that is just my opinion. Also, many of the allegations would be a violation of Linden's ever-growing "terms of service" but not much of a legal issue. At worst, Second Life gets one more self-inflicted PR blackeye, which may ultimately benefit OS and other grids. Also, I feel like the decentralized way most of OS functions inoculates it from a lot of what LL may be (or may NOT be) staring at. I think that is a good thing.

AvatarLife... what you're saying is pure advertising; illegitimately, you're promoting on HG a grid that is not part of the Hypergrid, so you shouldn't be here, and I hope the site owner will address the requests and remove your region.

Furthermore, what you're saying is blatantly FALSE because, just like Avitron, you have collected free content from all over Opensimulator. From OSGRID, you have Agorà avatars, content from SoulGrid, and many other grids, so what are you working hard on? On taking content for profit because uploads and much more are paid, just like it was in Avitron, and part of the team is the same.

So the fact that you're writing to advertise is absurd...

In many places (including some YouTube videos), you have been compared to Avitron, and you are like Avitron in every way; after all, at least one staff member is the same.

Furthermore, it is definitely ILLEGAL to promote gambling in that way; if not, where are the references to companies and the necessary permits and licenses as the law requires? Where are the requests related to profit taxation?

It's very likely that you're just deceiving and exploiting the Opensimulator community, and what you have is found everywhere because it comes from Opensimulator, and I repeat, there are functional and magnificent casinos like Wolf Territories', but not only.

So your comments just for advertising don't hold, you are just as fraudulent as Avitron.

How very mature....

Yes, very mature. I know people who have purchased an item at WTG for over 100 Gloebits, 150 or maybe more if I remember correctly, with that texture that actually COULD NOT BE SOLD. Furthermore, Lunaria vaguely responds to Fred and does not directly address the comment at all. It's not fair to accuse so many people of copybotting and then do the same thing in a different way, MAKING MONEY from it... even if it's a small amount, you're still making people spend money on your products knowing that you can't sell that product. (if you sell 1,000 at 100 Gloebits, do the math on how much you can earn... for example), so yes, mature comment, mine. And always quoting Luna Lunaria, I say to you, "I don't think there's anything else to say" :) (HA HA HA)

Can you show us content with a usage license that allows you to resell the item you obtain for free or for payment?

Here's a listing: https://www.kitely.com/market/product/50078225/Venus-de-Mi... here's the source file: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1892710 and here's the license: https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

How interesting that I got an email a little while ago from Ilan at Kitely that someone complained about one of my listings as not having the right license. Instead of referring to the license website I noted on the listing for the item, they presented a different 3d model website with a different license and told him I had no right to sell it. I simply pointed Ilan back to the listing and he was fine. That being said, there is no need for me to answer any more of your questions.

Of course, I don't think there's a need to respond," Fred jumped in, who knows a lot about licenses and items usable in various contexts while respecting their content... So, forgive me, but I'll say, "there's no need for me to respond here, Fred already did, and I think he covered everything..." Especially since you've shown a license regarding the many contents that YOU PROBABLY CAN'T RESALE and on which YOU CAN'T PROFIT, but you still do it anyway. Honesty, Lunaria, if you want to appear "healthy," at least try to be HONEST. :)

You know if you're going to pick apart every texture, model and license just to stand on some higher ground than a person you're having a silly argument with, you're going to have a boring life. How much money do you think people actually make selling anything in virtual worlds? I can tell you from experience in SL - not much. The profits are coffee money at best.
liked(4)
No matter how much you earn, what matters is that you are violating a license, as demonstrated by Fred, who certainly knows licenses well and works with them, for the benefit of all.

It's not true that everyone only earns the money for a coffee; there are builders in SL who earn well, can live off their earnings, and in some cases sell 3D models taken from 3D sites exclusively for personal use. :)

Having said that, I don't think there's anything else to add (quoting a phrase from Luna Lunaria).

Of all this, I understood one thing for sure: Luna, a very skilled builder, sells items that simply rotate textures she found on the internet, which anyone could take for FREE, apply a script to, and make them rotate similarly.

Now I wonder, if I were to take the same texture from the internet for free, would you accuse me of stealing your texture?

And then, the usual discussion that also happens in SL, do these textures you take have a license for personal use or can you "resell" them and make a profit? Because many builders who accuse others of copybotting in SL actually sell 3D models that they couldn't sell, as the model's usage license is personal (if free) or goes up to 3 thousand dollars for resale (with a percentage going to the original creator). What do you do, Luna? Do you accuse me of copying the texture?

Do you have a license to sell a simple rotating texture for 250L$/G$ or something else? I'm asking out of genuine curiosity :)
Well that's a whole other rabbit hole to fall into. Was the texture in question from an open source repository of textures? Is the original artist credited? I mean we are in the OpenSim where there is supposed to be the spirit of Open Source culture. The idea of stealing textures available in common spaces is contrary to this.

Why does he engage in covert advertising, even if you don't agree with me, I respect your way of thinking, you've had evidence of that in other contexts, so I believe you understand what I mean.

Simply put, continuously and indirectly advertising Boam and his service is harmful to the community or it's not correct to do it that way.

For example, Lunaria loves the "Wolf Territories grid" and always speaks highly of it, but only if the context requires it, and she still advertises her store. However, if you look at this person's profile timeline, unless they have removed some past posts, they clearly advertise and then move on to do 'covert' advertising, and this doesn't sit well with me. It would be more correct if she said, 'I am a sales agent for Boam's services.' XD

Some time ago, I addressed the issue of the high costs of some services defined as high quality, while they were not (at that time, today I believe the quality/price ratio is average), and I received many private messages agreeing with me from people who had paid or were still paying for a service that was actually poor. All that advertising was excessive like the costs because not everything worked well in the virtual world; rez times were slow, and teleports didn't work (this I don't know now). So the advertising of these people was actually a trap to raise funds regularly (by renting regions) but selling something that wasn't as presented.

Remember that here, opposers always comment, but few brave ones comment publicly. Others prefer to write in private and confirm, and I certainly won't betray their trust. But not all those who think like you expose themselves, perhaps because they have a grid, or perhaps because they don't want to expose themselves to not see the problems, because they sing, DJ, or for other reasons. But there have been and will always be some brave ones.

The owner of that grid revised his prices and continued to develop his grid greatly, which today is one of the best in terms of technology, performance-wise, I think it's average, nothing special.

That's one of the reasons I have, Kristina.

@Mistressdelgato Said : "I have helped a few people and others have helped me. i help when i can and know the answer. If i dont know it i recommend people who can and know the answer."

And what did I say? Can't you see that, as usual, some comments are really ridiculous and useless? Do you see that you confirm what I wrote?

Now I ask you, if you were to offer a paid service for a grid, and it doesn't work properly, how would you consider the help you offer to the person who PAYS you for the service? Would you consider it owed assistance included in the service, or a favor? Do you consider it part of your working time or a favor? Because I consider the help I offer to a customer if they have problems with a product I sell them, they pay me regularly and it doesn't work, as part of my working time. What do you say?

Here we are not talking about Fred with Dreamgrid who works for free for everyone, then he deserves thanks, here we are talking about pure servility and a person who has been advertising a system for over a year and passing it off as a "friendly" act by the owner when instead it is an owed act.

Wake up, guys, wake up mentally, come on.

As someone said, Boam and Ferraris move differently but the end goal is the same, and we saw it when avitron announced the closure...

I'm confident that you can do it, and wake up, understand that those who call someone else a troll are actually trolling themselves because they can't sustain a constructive conversation, that there are people who appear innocent but actually have ulterior motives, that if a grid is called Friends it doesn't mean it's friendly, that if a person claims freedom it doesn't mean they want it for everyone, that those who accuse others of creating drama and can only write in the comments 'you're causing drama!' are actually creating drama themselves in that precise moment in that post, in short, try to be constructive...

I'm confident that slowly you will wake up from these illusions and recognize those who truly deserve it, the proper respect for the work they do both for themselves and for the community.

honestly the way you originally made the comment with me in it didn't seem like a compliment, it was confusing. However if someone was paying me for a service like a server for example, even tho there paying me i dont have to help them anymore then just with the server. it is my choice to help outside of what i am being paid for.

I stand with the fact that josh help outside of his paid service or at least how i look at it.

It makes me laugh at you, and I laugh very honestly.

You all feel entitled to speak and comment freely, you forcefully take hold of this freedom that rightly should be everyone's right.

Everyone should be able to express their opinions, but...

If someone expresses theirs and it contrasts with yours, the only thing you do is invoke the right to express thoughts in defense of someone or simply to attack someone else, depriving others of the same right.

In short, some of you, besides always repeating the same questions, perhaps because lazy to read things already written, feel the need to express yourselves, nullifying the right of others to speak, because if those who speak or write are not in line with your "respectability," then they must be silenced.

You are really very funny XD

Lone, honestly, I think you did a good deed. It didn't turn into a drama, but the hypocrisy of certain individuals who pay for a service and advertise it as an act of love and sacrifice on the part of the service provider when assistance is actually included seems ridiculous to me.

You did a good deed, and Boam's grids are worth 1/100000000000 of what you can create.

You're not paid, she's not your client unlike Boam who profits from it, so the thanks should primarily go to you.

Best regards! :)

@Harleyjannys

Have you ever seen her profile? Her posts? On more than one occasion, she shows devotion and advertises the services (otherwise quite common and poor) of Boam, which in other posts of mine has been considered equivalent to Ferraris in many instances (which unfortunately seems to be reopening soon...).

Upon reflection, why advertise Boam's help if their support is part of a paid service? Furthermore, I repeat, the only one who provided sincere help was Lone Wolf, because he doesn't gain anything from it, while Boam has only done his job, I add, as well written in the post I made, but as always, many cannot read... that here on more than one occasion users even with small grids have helped each other.

So the real question is: why is she so devoted to Boam? And above all, why did she delete my comment where we were looking for an answer on what kind of problem she has ever had and which pointed out that many people have helped each other and where it was said that the service should be included since it also pays a lot? Why didn't she block me? Why is she so cowardly? These are the questions to ask, don't you think?

I'm almost tempted to block her now... hehehe :)
No, I haven't, and to be honest I still can't understand why do you care about her devotion towards whoever she wants.
She seems happy and the people helping too. So, my question stands... why do YOU care?
liked(5)
And why do you care?

It seems like you also care that she makes a good impression...

I'm all for honesty, and I believe this person isn't showing "sincere devotion" but only "acts of exploitation" to attract users to rent Boam's services.

We've already discussed this in other contexts. That said, if you don't understand, reread the comments and the post, but rather tell me:

WHY DO YOU CARE?

I always care to understand why people suffer with others happiness. Every time I see someone suffocating about something similar I ask. So far, no one has been able to explain to me why. You are another one in the list.

I also want to understand why the truth is hidden and why there is such hostility towards those who publicly announce it, asking for explanations about truly strange posts that aim to divert people through servility.

And you too are on my list of people who judge easily and hide the truths that would prevent deceiving people.

I'd say we're even, but we can end the conversation here, as it would be pointless to continue. I don't like those people, like you, who judge without concrete facts and deny evidence by lying knowing they're lying.

Oh, right, remember, true happiness comes from the truth, as many enlightened minds have always said and taught.

But then again, thinking of you, you're definitely one of those who accuse others of making dramas just because they can't respond to topics in a simple and thorough manner... hehehe

You mentioned losing IAR and OAR files, so I'm wondering if your entire disk was erased. Not just the database—how can a script wipe your entire disk, including the folders where your backups are stored?

I think you should investigate the issue of losing your data by focusing on other factors, such as human errors (unintentional data deletion), service provider errors (in which case, you may seek compensation if you were paying for a server), or other issues. It's really strange that a script would erase the entire contents of your disk.

Anyway, I'm reiterating my previous response:

Honestly, I have never read from any scripter, or even from those who create modules for scripts in Opensimulator, that a script can call a function to delete the entire database. There is a script, for example, that allows setting up a partnership between accounts, but it should make a call to a web-type function by connecting to a PHP page, thus making a call to something created and set up by the grid owner on their server.

Furthermore, there is an integrated security system for making HTML calls in Opensimulator (there is a specific section in opensim.ini and opensimdefaults.ini), so I don't think that was the issue. I don't believe the deletion of your entire database could be related to a script. :)

Well, at the time all this happened I was in bed and Mike was at work. So I know no one was 'legally' logged into our server. There were 3 of our members on the grid watching the assets disappear and reporting to Mike in our Discord group. There was nothing he could do about it. By the time he got home the grid was gone. IAR, OAR, backups all those files were gone. The ini files were gone. So if it wasn't a script then someone had managed to find their way into the server. In terms of the hosting company, they don't maintain our server, that is up to us. It just seems weird that files were selectively deleted. I don't have any answers and only one I have from a 3rd party is these scripts made to take advantage of the bugs in the sql database. I'm no scripter and certainly not a hacker. All I know it that it happened and people were there watching it happen. I have no difinitive answers just speculation. I wish I had answers so we can work out how to prevent this happening again.

If Resurgence was professionally hosted on an actual server, and it was still possible for amateurs to breach into the data centre and the machine and acquire full admin rights on Windows, then something is wrong with the hosting company.

I'm on the edge of saying that something is fundamentally wrong with Windows as an operating system for Internet servers. But I think only one out of maybe 15 grids is not running on Windows, and I refuse to believe that an operating system is so inherently unsafe and still regularly exposed to the Internet by professionals.

I still have to shudder thinking about those thousands of DreamGrids running on personal Windows computers behind provider-issued, customer-grade routers. Either they're even more unsafe, or if not, that'd say a lot about the hosting company.

Still, the backups are a key issue. DreamGrid is mainly intended for computers at home where you can stick a USB pen drive into the machine and copy the backups automatically created by DreamGrid onto that drive. I think if I said that securing DreamGrid backups on an external drive at home when the grid runs in a data centre is a bit more difficult, that'd be an understatement.

Nonetheless, if you start over, this will have to be done. It won't save your grid from being wiped, but you can always restore it, for it'll save your backups from being wiped.
liked(1)
Oh it will be backed up off the server now. There is no trust left.

I don't think hacking our server could be difficult though, especially when you think about global companies and governments getting hacked. Had a few really big hacks recently here in Australia where peoples data was downloaded to the dark web. We really are just small fish in the grand scheme of things.
liked(1)
This clearly wasn't an attack through OpenSim, using a script. This rather reads like someone having gained access to the underlying Windows system with full admin rights. (Resurgence was a DreamGrid, and DreamGrid is Windows-only.)

They could easily have deleted the whole DreamGrid. Then they might have snooped around on the machine, looking for backups outside the DreamGrid install, but still on the same machine, and deleted them as well.

Or they could simply have quick-formatted all drives in the machine, one by one, not only wiping out the grid but absolutely everything on the computer.

I would be curious to understand how they could have breached a paid server so easily, assuming you had a paid server, but even if it was a server within your "computer," how this could have happened.

Generally, servers from providers like Contabo or OVH are highly secure against these types of hacks. However, understanding how they managed it would be very helpful for the community.

I also think about those instances where grids accidentally delete the folder with all the assets. Obviously, if you delete the folder with assets on file, even if you reload an OAR, the textures and data of some types won't load, and you'll see almost everything in white and, in some cases, deformed. Then they claim someone hacked them, but instead, they deleted that folder, confusing it with the cache folder.

Of course, it may not be your case, but it has often happened to others.

Do you have more important information to share with the community to understand how you were hacked?

It looks like there are some scripts around designed to take advantage of some bugs in the script engine or something to break SQL databases. Not sure how it is uploaded right now but working on that. I think Pagane's post above (the link) has some good advice in it so we will try to lock down any future grid we set up with some extra safe guards.
