Q: I was kicked!
A: In most, but not all, cases a forceful removal is the result of access restrictions placed either on a user or the grid the user originates from. The reason for the removal is given and may be one of the following.
Region owners and estate managers have the ability to remove users from their regions and those with ownership of a parcel may elect to close it off as well. This results in being forcefully moved out of the parcel in question or even entirely removed from the region.
ZetaWorlds itself imposes restrictions on users and hypergrid access based upon factors detrimental to it or its users. Users violating the Rules and Conduct of ZetaWorlds may be restricted from access certain regions or the grid as a result.
Hypergrid access to ZetaWorlds is regulated due to various conditions present within the Hypergrid system potentially and actively causing issues on ZetaWorlds. These include, but are not limited to:
Use of dynamic DNS services creating problems with cached DNS data, IP addresses required for proper callbacks and changing addresses at the same end point leaving malformed data behind or causing connections to break. Read more here.
Use of throwaway setups leaving behind orphaned data and disconnected endpoints, which cause connection retries and failures detrimental to performance of grid and regions. Read more here.
Use of throwaway setups to circumvent restrictions or inject malicious data.
Violations of rules and conduct guidlines.
Failure to properly identify ownership and operational control of a public platform like a grid, lacking terms of service agreements, imprints or web presence entirely. Read more here.
Improper setup of OpenSim resulting in connection failures, bad data transfer or malformed data being generated. For example bad usernames.
Use of third-party authentication or access regulation modules breaking the "open-sea" nature of the Hypergrid system.
Use of IP address instead of fully qualified domain names, due to the nature of address resolution in OpenSim improperly handling IP addresses as FQDNs.
Use of banned viewers and attempts to circumvent restrictions of their use.
Content theft and other malicious activity.
ZetaWorlds errs on the side of caution in regards to these problems and imposes restrictions when issues are found. As experience has shown over the years with the influx of more throwaway and "out-the-box" systems being heavily detrimental to ZetaWorlds in both performance, security and stability. Approaching these issues with contempt is problematic and the probability of issues is greatly underestimated by a lot of grid operators. The resulting "cleanup" on our end is time consuming and difficult to achieve in a lot of cases, which takes away resources and ties up administrators in otherwise preventable workloads.
We want to keep the Hypergrid and ZetaWorlds as open as possible, but also have a duty toward our own users and community to both protect them from harm and ensure the stability and performance of the platform they call their home. We happily lift restrictions when it is becoming clear an effort is made to not be detrimental to the Hypergrid, any grid, or us in particular and welcome every new grid to the metaverse.
If you have specific questions or want more detailed information as to why a restriction was imposed or how to get it lifted feel free to contact ZetaWorlds administration.
