## Lord Vaelrath

### The Dragon King

Long before Seraphina Roseblossom was born, the name **Vaelrath** was spoken throughout Whispering Willows only in whispers.

He had once belonged to an ancient elven bloodline, one whose magic was bound not to flowers, rivers, or living forests, but to **dragons**.

For generations, his family served as guardians of the great dragons nesting beyond the mountains. They were taught that dragons were companions to be respected, never creatures to be mastered.

Vaelrath believed otherwise.

He discovered that the oldest dragons possessed a magic capable of strengthening his own. Instead of earning their loyalty, he learned to dominate them. With every dragon that bowed before him, his power grew.

Eventually, Vaelrath stopped calling himself their guardian.

He became their **King**.

### His Desire for Whispering Willows

Vaelrath has conquered lands before, but Whispering Willows is different.

The realm is alive with ancient magic.

Its rivers, forests, creatures and people are connected by something older than any crown. Vaelrath believes that if he controls the heart of Whispering Willows, even the land itself will eventually answer to him.

There is only one obstacle.

**Princess Seraphina Roseblossom.**

The strange bond between Seraphina and Whispering Willows fascinates him. Where Vaelrath bends creatures through fear, they approach Seraphina willingly. Where he demands loyalty, she receives it without asking.

He cannot understand it.

And what Vaelrath cannot understand, he wants to possess.

He does not merely want Seraphina defeated. He wants the beloved princess of Whispering Willows kept at his side as his captive, both as a symbol of his victory and as proof to the realm that even its cherished princess can be brought beneath the Dragon King's rule.

But Vaelrath has made one dangerous mistake.

He believes Seraphina's kindness makes her easy to break.

### The Dragon King's Nature

Vaelrath is patient, intelligent and frighteningly calm.

He rarely needs to shout.

His anger is far more dangerous when his voice becomes quiet.

He considers fear an excellent tool and affection a weakness. Loyalty, in his mind, is something purchased, commanded or forced. The idea that people might willingly risk their lives for another person is almost incomprehensible to him.

That is why Seraphina unsettles him so deeply.

She possesses something all his armies, dragons and castles have never given him.

**She is loved.**

And somewhere beneath the crown, the cruelty and the terrible power of the Dragon King lies a truth Vaelrath would never admit:

He envies her for it.

### The Coming War

Vaelrath's dragons have begun appearing above the distant mountains.

His scouts have crossed the borders.

Strange red lights sometimes burn beyond the forests at night.

Yet the Dragon King has not attacked.

Not yet.

He sits upon his throne and waits, convinced that eventually Whispering Willows will kneel before him.

And in the peaceful valleys beneath the ancient willows, Seraphina knows something is coming.

She does not know when.

She does not know from where.

But sometimes, when the evening grows strangely silent, even the oldest willow branches turn toward the mountains.

As though they, too, are watching for dragons.
