OS quirks
Hi, if this is the wrong place to post this, let me know.
As a newbie to OS I have noticed a few things that are a bit confusing and I am trying to get my head around them. They might be common things for you guys, so I thought I would ask.
1) I first registered and logged in via osgrid. But I leased land in Neverworld. I noticed I don’t seem to be able to set home to here at my home in Neverworld. I am assuming this is because I have not leased as a registered Neverworlder but with my osgrid account?
2) I usually get dressed at home in Neverworld. When I TP to other worlds sometimes I can be a little naked for a moment, but sometimes I might be missing a key part of clothing. Is this common? Is there a cure for this?
3) When I am in osgrid and use the firestorm search I seem to get reasonable results. But if I go home or travel to other worlds the search doesnt always work or return results. Is this common, a firestorm quirk, or me?
4) Due to the nature of OS being a collection of different worlds rather than one entity there appear to be a few quirks. Are there any other quirks you can think of not in my list above that I have yet to encounter? :-)

Just my input, for what it is worth. To be able to set your home to Neverworld within OSGrid, you might need to be in their group. The hypergrid has a nasty habit for stealing clothing. For me, I keep an outfit in my suitcase, however OSGrid does not use suitcase. You have no choice but to wait for OSGrid and the grid you are visiting to exchange the data about your avatar, and to possibly load. I am uncertain what search you are using, but as far as I know, in-browser (aka Firestorm) will rarely work. Instead, you can search the websites, such as OSGrid website or OpenSimWorld, or just ask around. There are many quirks about the Hypergrid, like the odds that the Friends List will not work or Instant Messaging across grids. Not to mention the different rules on the different grids. Some support child avatars. Some support online sexual activities. Some do not. Some grids are Dom/Sub grids and expect you to know where you are and the rules on their grids. Might not be bad for you if that is what you are looking for. However, some are not nice about you visiting if you do not support their ideals. So beware. Other than that, Welcome to OpenSim and the Hypergrid. Once you get a feel for OpenSim and the Hypergrid, you will feel the immense freedom and creative possibilities. You will also learn some of the limitations. Wish ya luck.

I do have an outfit in the My Outfit folder and it appears to be the default when I arrive.
Your comment about Friends is interesting. So friending some does work sometimes? When I first landed in osgrid, someone did hand me a few items and also friended me. They are still in my friend list.
I also met someone the next day when out and about, and not in osgrid, and they friended me but the next day were not in my list.
Is there an alternative process to add friends?
Being a pretty open minded soul I doubt I will be shocked or horrified when arriving at any location but thanks for the heads up that local rules might be an issue.

I have land and a home now, so I am just trying to find complete avatars based on Legacy/Reborn/Lara X etc and then I can get comfortable with how I look - and then change every week :-)

Each grid configs their grid in their own specific needs. So you can never say like: Do this and that, and it works. Not to mention the diffrent versions or own forks some altered from the original. If you want to set a homepoint at a grid from another grid, thats often "forbidden" by the grid config, or the region settings. Best is to have an account in the grid where you want to set a homepoint, or ask the grid admin (what is always the best: Only this one knows their specific rules). There are about 2700 grids in OS not to forget. As Xaria mentioned: How your inventory behaves with e.g. suitcase is also a setting that comes from your homegrid. Some grids use that, some no more. Your avatar is registered, and so all your data , is at your homegrid. If you travel (hop) to other grids, you only take linked parts to the other grid, and not your "real" inventory. That was altered a few years ago to prevent overloading of the visited grid.

Thanks Copper. Yes, I am slowly starting to get my head around the idea that the thousands of grids have their own rules, and may not always be turned on or available. And I realise now that to have all the benefits of the grid my home is on may require me to create an account with them and that involves a second version of myself.
I have noticed references to having ones own grid, either on your own pc or elsewhere and that it can be turned on just when you need it. I wonder if this is a solution to having multiple accounts? Create a small home grid and set it to home for when you log in. And from there you are free to hypergrid around the place.
Anyhow... lots of fun, lots of places to explore and lots to learn.
