Update: I'm going to make this wheel a decor item so the scripting doesn't matter and people can still enjoy the scene that's put together and even jump in and take a picture of themselves.
So I had this idea.....I know, famous last words. And I should maybe be asking this in the scripting group. But I found this cool carnival ferris wheel on Sketchfab. And it's low prim. And I thought I would people it with some of those NPC statue types and then put 2 sits in every second car for us live avatars to make it look populated. Scripting is the bain of my existence. Any rotation or spin script I put in, or the Topsy Turvy thingy ball thing from the LK ferris wheel makes the little cars tip over and flip around and my poor little NPC people are in terrible peril now. Stan Lee is already battling his demons just getting on the wheel and reading self help books. Would anyone consider helping me save them from careening from the sky? I have both parts free to copy/buy for 0 in the parking lot of my Birch Grove Spring region.
Does there need to be a script in each car to keep it upright?

I would suggest making each car its own object separate from the main wheel, then linking the people to the cars and make the car the root prim. Then use the key frame motion script to animate each car separately. The hard part will be making the animation smooth and matching it to the rotation speed of the big wheel, and then setting all the parts in motion at the same time. While this is not impossible, it is going to be a challenge. The key frame motion scripts can be started with a chat command, so you could make a button that shouts the command to start the ride and hope that everything stays in sync. The other annoying part will be that you would have to remake all the animations if you want to relocate the ride. This would make packaging the ride for sale impossible unless the buyer has the skill to remake each animation for every car. This is the only way i can think of making it work with off the shelf parts found freely. It could possibly be done with fully custom scripts that would be time consuming to make.
Years ago in Second Life I made a big wheel out of prims and used the physics engine to make pivot points that the cars would physically hang from around the wheel. Then rotating the big wheel would move all the cars and they would have a realistic swinging motion as they moved. It was a lag monster and would have the habit of falling apart if there was a lag spike. I used the builders buddy to resemble the cars when they fell off lol.
I tried to replicate this in opensim but the physics engine is not up to the job here if using the default settings. I think if an object is colliding with more that 3 other objects then it rejects the other collisions and thus the other cars just fall off their pivots. I think you can adjust this setting, but I did not want to go down that route and shelved the idea in opensim.

Yes I was looking up some of the scripting options on the old SL scripting forums and it seems this is the only way to do this. It sounds like a pain. Kudos to you for taking it on in SL. I think I'm going to ultimately make this one a decorative wheel for scenery. I got a mod of the Topsy Turvey to work so that can be the one people actually "ride" when I eventually put together a fair. With no NPCs...lol. Thank you for your advice.

And I realize maybe I should have peopled each car I did that too and saved them as separates. Because now if we add more scripts they could end up really messed up because the cars will be separate from the NPCS......maybe this is just a decorative thing for pictures...lol
