Want to bring an animated GIF into your OpenSim world?

Gif2SL by Gonta Maltz is a small, free Windows utility that converts an animated GIF into a sequential PNG texture sheet that can be animated on a prim.

You can use Gif2SL to create swimming fish, crawling ants, animated signs, and other moving effects. Once you understand how it works, there are a lot of fun possibilities for bringing extra life and movement into a region.

How to use Gif2SL:

Open the program and click Load GIF.
Select the animated GIF you want to convert.
If your GIF has a transparent background, check Transparency so the alpha channel is preserved.
Click Output.
Gif2SL converts the animation into a single PNG sprite sheet containing the animation frames.
The output filename includes the horizontal frames, vertical frames, and frames-per-second information needed for the animation.
Upload the finished PNG texture to your grid.
Place the texture into a prim along with the free animation script available from Outworldz.
The script calculates the frames and speed and plays your animation inworld.

Think beyond signs and screens. You can experiment with animals, insects, water effects, magical effects, moving decorations, animated displays, and whatever else you can dream up.
