Dear Everyone... After endless battles with windows 10. The bizarre server crashes, the triplicate items in my oars... I'm going to linux. Let me explain why, today my server decided the usb ports were no longer needed. So I have no mouse, no keyboard, they don't even work in bios. This system is on a very powerful UPS so I know lightning didn't get it, but on the other hand it was 5 years old. So in messing with it while the keyboard still worked, I tried to fix the mouse but wound up crashing my grid, and then the mother board died leaving me once again friendless with no grid. :( So I did what every opensimian does and ordered a new server. But I think this time I'm going with debian. Hopefully I can find someone that uses debian with opensim to give me some insider information to get it up and running when the new server comes in. But just so you know, I'm down due to mysterious server problems. I have created an account on wolf territories called CyberGlo CyberStar, you can friend me there and I will probably never lose your friendship. Sorry for the troubles. CC

Oh my God ... hopefully you get it working again soon. Ask Dame (former Copycat admin) for Debian. But she is all doing without graphic interface. All with command lines in Terminal. But she says it is best one can do. You must be unix crack for this, I guess. Lonewolf is Unix crack too. Perhaps he can help.

I work with M$ from Apple][ times (yes M$ is founded before IBM-PC times) and of course work with almost all other OS.
Will not argue why and how, but M$ server is... like pig with bells:)
Now serious.
On our word, Servers use VMWARE, RHEL, Debian or few other HOST OS to start SUPERVISOR with users software on virtual machines. All other what you read somewhere is... cheap old porno! (Ops... Fred ban me before few years for this words:)
I will suggest to start minimal Debian host without any GUI. Look here for HowTo: https://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=Debian_12&p=downl...
Next install VirtualBOX (without Guest Additions - no need them) and may start lots of virtual machines and experiment with best for you.
Of course may instal and Win7 or Win10 with DreamGrid - easy and fast - 1-2 hours max.
Best of this is - may make easy and fast backup of all virtual machine (only disk omage file is enough)
May crash and restore GUEST virtial machines with pleasure easy and fast and HOST will be safe always:)
My choice? Before many years i move to RHEL and Debian. Of course have and few machines with MacOS and Win but this is for customers suport only.
What Linux is best? ANY!!! Only must know - Fedora and Ubuntu is cutting edge but... very experimental and little extreme. RHEL is crazy conservative, but old and and rock stable. I use Debian12 for OpenSIM.

When you say to start with a Debian without a GUI and then have an operating system like Win10 on it, is that still on a Debian system without a GUI?
You're talking about VirtualBOX, do you recommend it over VMWare?
(I was wondering what RHEL was... but it's Red Hat :-) )

To access screen of already instaled stupid OS like Windows may install on them some freeRDP or VNC server.

ahhh ok, we are using VMWare workstation on windows and I access VM with VNC, and I use Putty and Windows terminal to access to other server and consoles.
I was not aware it is possible for a win client without any GUI on the server and didn't know VirtualBOX could be used without gui on tu server, all on a terminal always seem so hard ;-)
But we have Home Assistant on a Proxmox machine, I will see if I can test something like Win10 on it :-)

GUI on server is usable only to decrease 3-4 times speed and to increase thousands times crashes and freezes:)
For example normal linux server host is restarted after 2-3 years, because of major update.
For example after update from Debian11 to Debian12. This require restart of host and leads to 2-10 minutes downtime.

I've used Windows in all it's forms since the very first release, now I only keep it running in VM to be able to help friends occasionally.
I held MS systems engineer+ level qualifications for several years.
I even remember when MS was refusing to implement any IP protocol as it was slightly slower than their NetBEUI workgroup only product and that they, being MS didn't expect a wider network of computers to take off.
I've used (and currently use) many flavours of Linux, some rock solid, some definitely NOT :)
But if you wanted to pick one you could rely on, that had great support and a massive user base I'd say "Debian" to you so nice choice my friend.
It's a learning curve and it will take a little time but education always costs and it WILL be worth it.
People will tell you they have grids up and running on anything from Arch to some of the new "immutable" Linux distros - and it's true.
But Debian is still a solid choice for you now and I suspect that in very little time you will have something great (and reliable) running (faster).
So head down and spend the time, no doubt you have the skills, this is just a new path to explore with them.
I won't wish you luck, just a wonderful journey.

Sorry to hear that, I'm sure a man of your talents will figure out the Linux way in no time. I mean I am a man of little talent and I somehow managed to cobble together my shitty world running in grid mode on Linux Mint.
I remote accessed into a friends laptop and helped him setup Dream Grid a while ago and was impressed with how simple it was to get everything up and running. Knowing how it worked on Linux made figuring out dream grid a breeze in comparison. He did have a lot of issues keeping his world online as Windows would love to restart his laptop whenever it felt like it and that caused some issues.
I'm sure you will love Linux for not randomly restarting your computer on a whim.

I've used Debian both for work and home for probably over 20 years. My grid runs on Debian - apart from a brief period of running Ubuntu (good but far too many updates) I've always run OpenSim on Debian. Currently my grid runs on a 16 vcore Virtual machine with 64GB Ram - running under ProxMox on a old Dell T7910 workstation with two Xeon E5-2680v2 CPUs with 256GB Ram. Yes its a Dell - Yes its OLD but its really reliable and perfectly fast enough for what I need.
I know OpenSim was "designed" for Windows - but personally I would never run it (or any servers) on Windows.

I had a similar problem with my Dell... letting it update helped. but yes, I get it. Weird stuff happening.
