I look at social media and I get quite scared by the bigoted comments of the ignorant who influence previously wouldn't stretch any further than their local pub (bar) and their fellow morons there. The hostility directed at anyone not white and English speaking is frightening. How random events involving crimes committed by a few or single members of a community suddenly become the standard by which all members of that community are judged, whether they be LGBTQA+ or members of a minority community or according to their immigration status. The far right claims to be acting in the interests of women and children, but then promotes some of the worst kinds of misogyny. All of this encouraged and pretty much incited by the elected far-right in our legislative assemblies.
I live in Cymru (Wales) and we have a new government that is trying to make a difference, to improve the lives of ordinary people in the country. The governing party, Plaid Cymru is widely castigated for supporting Trans Equality and inclusion, (
https://www.partyof.wales/trans_equality) and receives a lot of bigotry on the part of the uneducated morons who focus on the handful of 'trans' people of bad intent (usually formerly male sex offenders who have subsequently changed gender) and try to present these dangerous individuals as representative of the whole. A similar approach is of course in play when it comes to the actions of a tiny minority of asylum seekers/refugees. No matter how much the 'left' emphasises that no criminal activity is acceptable, the far-right seeks to weaponise any incident in an attempt to discredit the humane approach taken, not just by the left, but by decent human beings regardless of their political leanings. Sadly, though the recent Senedd election provided an historic victory for the ruling party, Plaid Cymru, the offical opposition is the fascist Reform UK, who have wasted no time in starting their campaign of wasting Senedd time asking questions about areas of policy retained by the Westminster government, which therefore cannot be changed by the Welsh Government. Reform UK are also hostile to all they consider to be 'woke'.
The far-right will only triumph if enough of us see others as less human than ourselves. We need to check our privelege every time we find ourselves looking down on someone – and we all do at times, for whatever reasons – and remind ourselves that other person is a human being before they are anything else.
