I don't understand the decision to shut everything down a move that effectively leaves so many people stranded. OSGrid has weathered numerous outages before; planning a comeback after purging corrupted data wouldn't be unprecedented—provided, of course, that most users have backups to get started again... Why rule out that possibility? A relaunch could be an opportunity to bolster the grid's security; users would surely understand the necessary constraints.
I don't mean to downplay the efforts of the team that keeps the grid running almost single-handedly, and the exhaustion following such attacks is understandable. Yet, I can't help but feel there must be another solution before resorting to creating a new "$econd Life" that runs counter to the very spirit of OSGrid!

Because they would expose themselves to further attacks as long they allow uploading IAR's and ORS and connecting simulators to their grid. In the statement they wrote: "The only way to stop these attacks and secure the database would be to close our infrastructure and transition to a closed, commercial model. That move would completely erase the open ethos this grid was originally built upon. "
So you can do either this or close the entire grid. And they choose the 2nd option.

I’ve read their text carefully, but I’m not proposing a restart exactly as it was before; I specifically suggested restarting with constraints on data loading. Other non-commercial grids manage to do this, and data loading can be conditioned in various ways. I understand their position, but it seems to me that not all solutions have been considered—the users deserve another attempt.

And I don't know a 2nd grid operating at this large scale like OS and allow freely up- and downloading iar's and oar's. Or let you connect your own sims to their service. And even if there is a similar grid, they would think twice now before they choose to be open like OS. And that's the real harm to OpenSim: you're open, then you maybe vulnerable.

That was my thought today as well. On the one hand, they could "simply" purge and refill the asset server again. It'd be inconvenient, it'd anger the residents, but at least the grid would survive.
On the other hand, the last time they did that, they basically relied on people making IARs and OARs and re-uploading them. The only ones who saved their stuff piece by piece were those who didn't have land of their own and avatars in other grids. And I don't think they'd allow IAR uploads anytime soon even if OSgrid survived. They may even be afraid that IARs saved in OSgrid today will be poisoned, too.

Couldn't we consider filtering imports a bit? That was done during last year's major inventory cleanup. Also, I was talking about implementing security constraints—like requiring some form of mandatory signature from those uploading data, and perhaps setting volume limits...

Thankfully, in the past I only allowed friends to connect to my grid services. Only they could upload IAR independently. I never allowed the other sim renters to do it themselves; I did it myself.
What happened on OsGrid is utterly pathetic. What kind of people do something like that? Envious people or commercial grid-downers who wanted to eliminate free competition? Who knows? In any case, I feel very sorry for the residents. I disabled open registration a while ago. Anyone who wants to join us has to contact me personally.

I sincerely hope there'll be a way to save some of the historic sites in OSgrid and keep them alive. For OSgrid is one of the last grids that are old enough for its residents to actually have built their own buildings, their own structures, their own content in general, instead of just resorting to ripped SL stuff.
Wright Plaza, for example, deserves to live on elsewhere, stocked shops and all. Inmidst dozens of freebie sims that are trying to lure as many customers as possible with nothing but freshly ripped SL payware, it's a refreshing alternative full of content that can actually be trusted to be legal and made in and for OpenSim. It offers the last remnants of Lani, of the ArcadiaShop, of Encantada, three great freebie sims full of original content that have perished. Other content has always been exclusive to Wright Plaza.
OSgrid is also home to the last two surviving places from Metropolis, Condensation Land and LibDescent.

I imagine some of the smaller grids might gain some weight. It was so sad to see Metropolis go. Where does the test bed for future development go now? I suspect with the current capabilities with machine intelligence, we will have 10 new Opensim forks in the next 5 years. Cheers.

My heart goes out to every OSgrid resident who has built a home, created something beautiful, made lifelong friendships, or simply found a place where they belonged. I also want to thank the administrators, developers, and volunteers who gave so much of themselves to keep that dream alive for nearly two decades. To everyone at OSgrid, thank you for being part of our shared history. I hope you will continue creating, exploring, and bringing that wonderful spirit of community wherever your journey takes you next.

Then what was the point of the reboot, the server maintenance, etc.? It was all for nothing. Why don't they name the people they think did it??

The incident that caused OSgrid to shut down happened AFTER the asset reset, AFTER the latest maintenance. Very recently. None of the maintenance done on OSgrid in the past could have prevented this.

there is no doubt going to be many sad people, and some wanting to give up on OpenSim entirely. remember we are a community, and opensim is bigger than any one grid. My heart goes out to everyone effected...
