Fleetwood – New Water Route and Redesigned Monorail Track

There are once again some new changes to discover on Fleetwood.

The water route to the Fleetwood sim, located right next to Fleetwood Beach, has been completely redesigned to make it more beautiful and varied. Instead of simply travelling along a plain waterway, visitors can now follow a much more romantic and natural-looking river course by boat.

The route winds its way between rocks, past lush vegetation and many small scenic details that make the journey feel much more atmospheric. The idea was to turn the boat trip itself into a relaxing little experience, giving visitors the chance to enjoy the surroundings at their own pace. With the rock formations and greenery along the river, the whole waterway now feels more enclosed, natural and immersive.

The Monorail route has also been significantly redesigned and made much more interesting.

The train no longer travels only through open landscape. Parts of the route now lead directly between large rock formations, making the journey feel narrower, more dramatic and much more varied than before.

One of the highlights is a new section where the Monorail even passes through a rock tunnel. Together with the surrounding cliffs and rocky passages, the route now feels more like a small mountain railway than a simple sightseeing ride.

Visitors who already know Fleetwood will immediately notice the changes. Both the new water route and the redesigned Monorail track are intended to encourage people not only to visit the sim, but also to explore it in different ways.

So: take a boat and follow the river, or hop on the Monorail and simply enjoy the ride.

Fleetwood is located right next to Fleetwood Beach.

Discussion for grid owners and HG enthusiast.

Just wondering how many would love to see this implemented for their sims grids.

One of the issues I find with HG is that most of the time the viewer only sends the UUID of an avatar or a group, and not the grid:port. The sim has a lookup table, but if that UUID has never been seen on this grid it has no way to find its home grid. The viewer may or may not have that info; in any case it does not send it.

Current workarounds are a look up table of visitors, to look at the last message to retrieve the grid info, creator info, leftover GridUser rows, and so on. That is not always possible. My understanding is OpenSim wanted to stay as compatible as stock SL / Firestorm as possible, so I am not discussing the option of having the viewer send these fields to the sim.

The idea that has been in my head for a while is to implement a distributed hash table of avatar and group UUIDs and their home grid:port. The DHT can be implemented with the Kademlia protocol. It was used in Kazaa, eMule’s Kad network and on BitTorrent’s Mainline DHT, Kazaa and the Kad/eMule side is the well-tested. There are C# libraries that already do this, Alethic.Kademlia, kademliath, dht-csharp, so we do not have to write the routing from scratch.

Each participating grid becomes a node in the DHT and seeds its own UUIDs and grid URL. Other grids can query the network to find where to request a profile or send an IM.

About privacy
No avatar information is sent to the DHT, no profile, no online status, no group info. It only says this number belongs to that grid. The grids still have full control to deny a profile request, an incoming message, and so on. So grid admins are in control of their resident privacy.

Assets are not included in the network. They are not needed. The unknown-grid problem is profiles, groups and IMs.

Resources

Just a UUID → grid:port (plus a signature) takes little space. Ballpark 100–200 bytes per record. 1,000,000 UUIDs may be in the low hundreds of megabytes for the whole overlay, and those are distributed across all nodes, so expect something like tens of megs per node even for tens of millions of UUIDs.
Bandwidth is little. A new UUID only needs to be seeded on account creation. UUIDs are immutable so there is no update. Once a day the grid can inform of deleted accounts or other housekeeping (URL change, tombstones).

Security

Records are signed. Only the grid that created the UUID can update or delete it.
I am not worried about “someone published this UUID first, now I cannot use it.” Grids mint their own UUIDs. If a number is already sitting in the DHT, you just create another one that belongs to you. The mapping is not a reservation of identity, it is only a pointer for lookups.

Kademlia and the libraries already take the usual overlay attacks into account, at least at the protocol level:
* Sybil: one operator spinning up many fake nodes
* Sibling / eclipse: crowding a target’s routing table so lookups only hit attacker nodes
* Prefix hoarding: parking nodes so you own a slice of the key space
* Routing-table poisoning: feeding bad contacts
* Churn / flood: join/leave or store spam to wear nodes out

While I am writing this I think it can later be expanded to include land / region search. Same overlay, different key type. Not needed for v1.

Making OpenSim actually a decentralized metaverse

This unknown UUID thing affects mainly Standalones sim and mini-grids, with residents they spend most of their time out on the HG, and most of their visitors are HG visitors. But in general a shared lookup helps the small less popular grids as much as the large ones.

Halloween with Fred: The Zombie That Just Won’t Stay Dead

Halloween is creeping closer, which means it is time to dig through the wonderfully strange corners of Outworldz and resurrect a few old friends.

And this one is very difficult to keep dead.

Meet Fred’s Animated Zombie.

This isn't the sort of zombie that stands in the corner of your Halloween build looking menacing while everyone ignores it.

Fred apparently looked at that idea and decided zombies needed a better job description.

This zombie walks.
It attacks.
It makes noise.
You can hit it.
It falls apart.
It puts itself back together.

And, naturally...

YOU CAN RIDE IT.

Because why run away from the zombie when you can climb aboard and drive the thing around?

A Zombie With a Few Tricks Left in Him

Fred designed the zombie as an animated wandering character using his Prim Animation Compiler system.

The animation sequence includes standing, attacking, walking with alternating left and right steps, reacting to hits, taking a particularly nasty hit, and finally falling completely to pieces.

But death is apparently only a temporary inconvenience.

After enough abuse, the zombie collapses into scattered pieces on the ground.

Wait a bit...

...and he puts himself back together.

Then off he goes again.

There is something wonderfully Fred about engineering an undead creature that even death can't persuade to stop working.

Go Ahead. Hit Him.

The zombie actually keeps score as people interact with him.

Clicking him causes a hit reaction and eventually does enough damage to trigger the full death animation.

Head, arms, body — down he goes.

Then the zombie reassembles himself and resumes wandering around.

It makes a great interactive Halloween prop because visitors aren't simply looking at something spooky. They're causing things to happen.

And probably clicking him repeatedly just to see him explode again.

We know how people are.

But Wait — There's a Ride Me Button

This may be my favorite part.

Right-click the zombie and choose RIDE ME.

Your avatar climbs aboard, and suddenly the shambling Halloween decoration has become transportation.

Fred's script turns the zombie into a controllable vehicle, allowing you to steer him with your arrow keys.

So while everyone else is arriving at the Halloween party on broomsticks, motorcycles and dragons, you can make your entrance...

piggybacking on a zombie.

I think that wins Halloween.

When You Get Off, It Gets Even Better

Getting off your undead transportation doesn't simply end the ride.

The zombie falls apart.

Then he reassembles himself.

Then he walks back home.

Because apparently Fred even taught the zombie to clean up after the party.

The Engineering Behind the Silly

That's what I particularly enjoy about discoveries like this in the Outworldz archives.

They're funny, but underneath the humor is some genuinely clever scripting.

The zombie combines prim animation, sounds, physics, vehicle controls, randomized movement, interaction, damage scoring, roaming boundaries and a home position into one wonderfully ridiculous project.

Fred didn't just explain how to use it, either. His original tutorial documents how the animations are recorded, how the physics base is constructed, how the sounds are added, how the riding position is created and how the scripts work together.

It's one of those projects where you can play with the finished creation — or dig into the code and learn something from the way it was made.

That has always been part of the fun of Outworldz.

Build something.

Take it apart.

Learn how it works.

Change it.

And occasionally ride it around while it makes monster noises.

Resurrect Something This Halloween

There are years and years of creations tucked away at Outworldz, and Halloween seems like an excellent excuse to start opening some of those old crypts.

Fred's zombie certainly deserves another walk among the living.
