OSGrid shuts down 12/31/2026 - How to save and self-host Vanilla 150MB
OSGrid announced closure after 19 years, after asset pollution from 5TB to 17TB. Final meeting Oct 18 11am hg.osgrid.org:80:Hurliman Plaza
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION:
save oar / save iar ONLY works if your region is CURRENTLY hosted on OSGrid and you have console access.
The vanilla install below creates YOUR OWN standalone at home, it is NOT OSGrid and it will be only usefull to load your OAR/IAR as archives.
Full guide:
https://ankhsenaton.netlify.app/
1) SAVE NOW (when OSGrid is not used too much! we don't want to crash it before 2027 !)
As region owner on OSGrid, in console:
save oar my-region.oar
save iar First Last / * backup.iar mypass
-> files appear in bin/ to grab via FTP.
Don't do a full 30GB IAR (3 days for me!). Do per folder with quotes if spaces:
save iar First Last "/My Objects/My Builds" builds.iar mypass
If tenant without console on OSGrid: ask your region owner for a save oar of your parcel + Take your objects.
If you are NOT on OSGrid, skip this step - you already have your OAR/IAR.
2) INSTALL YOUR OWN STANDALONE VANILLA (150MB)
Official files 0.9.3.0 Nov 8 2024:
http://opensimulator.org/dist/opensim-0.9.3.0.zip
Need .NET 8 SDK (no more mono)
Windows: dotnet OpenSim.dll
Linux: ./opensim.sh
First launch: standalone yes, SQLite yes.
This creates a local grid, offline.
3) REIMPORT YOUR BACKUP INTO YOUR STANDALONE
Copy .oar into bin/ then:
change region MyRegion
load oar my-region.oar
load iar / * backup.iar mypass --merge
4) WHERE TO GO AFTER
Keep it as standalone at home on 4GB VPS, or if you want HG again: Wolf Territories, BloodMoon, Kitely, Alternate Metaverse... You create a region via their panel then import your own OAR yourself or asking them.
PS: Our poor "be quiet" (aka Paela the deranged)βinstead of hurling insults at me and attributing to me some immense power to cause the degradation of his own fragile, pathetic systemβwould do better to find a solution that doesn't end up sabotaging the creations of so many users on "his" grid!
