Van der Graaf Generator entstand aus einer Begegnung zwischen Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill, geboren am fünften November 1948 in Ealing, West London, und Chris Judge Smith, zwei Studenten, die mehr an den existenziellen Abgründen der menschlichen Existenz interessiert waren als an kommerziellen Erfolgsformeln.
