I have seen a post or two lately on a topic that I feel i need to write about. There is a lot of Misinformation going around online and in world. I have been contemplating writing this for a few months until i saw a post that drew the line.
I mean no disrespect by my post, its only to educate others. please be respectful when commenting. Also my post is not to enforce a certain lifestyle or kink onto anyone. Its solely for education purposes only.
The majority online and in world seems to think that either a child avatar or a child avatar having sex with an adult is Ageplay. This is not Ageplay!
Ageplay is where an adult portrays a younger age and wears clothes that makes them partially look the part but yet still have the appearance of an adult. Also Ageplay can be between 2 consenting adults, one looking like a full adult and the other wearing childish clothes but still has appearance of an adult.
If you see a child avatar and an adult having sex, that is not in no way anything to do with Ageplay nor is it sexual Ageplay! that is pedo crap which is not tolerated in my grid! Please stop associating it with Ageplay.

FetLife has many group of age players of all kinds, but, yes, they are all adults. However, the kid role players dress and act the part, and in a setting like a child's bedroom. Even so, none of that is illegal. That has never been the issue. But as you see, sexual ageplay is a real term about a real activity -- in-world and out.

In the real life community we never once have used that word, in Ageplay the ABDL may have sexual tendency's but it doesn't mean Ageplay is sexual. this will most likely be my last response, in talking today with an expert she agreed on the misused term of sexual Ageplay as well as Ageplay is not sexual. Yes there is dark ageplay which is the correct term versus sexual Ageplay. but in virtual sex bewtween a child and adult is not sexual Ageplay same as in real life.

The focus should not be on Child avatars anyway but rather those who find then sexually attractive. Having had some younger looks in past (Teen, Tween) there been times I was approached by adults asking if I could make myself look younger to play. Those were the ones that made me cringe. A community that tries to ban anything looking like a child strikes me as one that is like an ex alcoholic trying to hide all the booze from sight in case they get triggered to drink.

In 2007, a visitor to an all-ages sim found that it was adult males who tried to find age-play partners - and largely had no luck. The kids who were there weren't there for sex dates. They were there to mingle with other kids and have some fun. The conclusion? Instead of banning kids, ban pervy adults trying to prey on them.

As someone mention before I would like to know what does a ''Child Avatar'' look like because clearly a lot of Grids in OS do not know ''Fully'' on what actual children look like in some cases as someone mention. They see someone who is under 7 ft with a petite body which automatically makes you a Child Avatar? I bet Most Adult Korean Women are considered Children to you all? I guess all of us who are Female Adults must have Large Over-size Breasts, 7ft and Big Butts? I guess most women in real are like that!!! OK, but seriously now. It would take approximately 34,129 avatars, with the height of 7 ft., stacked end to end, to reach the moon. It would take many more avatars, with the overall average adult human height of 5 ft. 5 in., stacked end to end, to do the same. To make it easier for a stack of avatars to reach the moon, we need to mandate that the height of OS avatars be increased to 11 ft. The future of the faux-human race in OS depends on it. If we allow child-sized avatars in OS, we are doomed. Doomed, I tell you!

to make my answer short the biggest thing is a child avi will have no breast at all. there are regions that have child avi skins and bodies etc so that helps determine the factor too.
I will however say that some of the new adult bodies may look like its questionable even tho its not. honestly you really just have to ask and hope someone doesn't get offended for asking.

I can't believe this topic has not just withered away, this community has beaten it to death. As @Nico has posted, report suspicious activity to the grid owners. I do not recommend screenshots because - 1) clothing can be de-rezzed thus picture is faked, and 2) technically you are transmitting/sharing porn. Food for thought. Simple solution, be like the OP or other grids on OSW, state ADULT AV's only, violators will be banned, DONE! Anyone else that allows ALL AV's, well that's their cross to bear and not yours, stop bitching.

If there is a place that allows all AVs, but prohibits sexual age-play, some kind of proof needs to be provided that this rule is being broken, and by whom. Good point about screenshots. Unfortunately, then we need to depend on the honesty of the person who is reporting it. There are some well-known crusaders who have a history of making false accusations.

Quibbling over the definition of words is a distraction from the real issue -- sexual activity with or by child AVs. Here is what to do if you see it actually occurring. Take a screenshot. If you need to, right-click on the participants and pull up their profile. Then send the screenshot and names to the region owner and the grid admin. The other thing to do is if a child AV messages you asking if you want to "cuddle." Send the log of that message to the region owner and grid admin and ask for that person to be banned. And what do you do about a child AV doing nothing sexual. Hmm, how about taking a picture of them clothed and say they are naked? Or how about not making an idiot of yourself and just ignore people who are doing nothing wrong.

I agree with what you said, i know incest is not just with a child but it can be part of it. with the young adult petite avatar bodies they have come out with now do make it hard because they look so young. I always try and as first but even there it seems we offend everyone just by asking.

I have been a Mistress for 30 years. The difference between age play and pedophilia is consent. Age play should be between consenting adults while pedophilia is with children who can't consent. I have encountered a few sims that have pictures on the walls of child avi's with adults. I think this crosses the line. I reported it but what can you do when the sim advocates for this type of behavior? All you can do is stay away if it's not your thing or we can, as a community, come together to bring awareness. The point of Opensim was to allow free creativity and unfortunately, some of those who crossed the line in SL came her to hide. I don't think children avi's
should be allowed on Opensim. If you are a fairy or elf and need a smaller avatar, then let's work to create some that are for that purpose but remove the child altogether.

There would have to be, at minimum, user verification at registration. And with Open SImulator being free, not many are going to want to do that. Its even more difficult when some are running the sims from their home computers and not through a world service. I personally have Zooby babies so my partner and I can have a family. I dont know of any other time when it would really be necessary to need a child avatar.

I don't agree with disallowing child avatars in Open Sim. They should be okay in all General, and most Moderate sims. If child avis are clearly engaging in adult behavior, sure, those users should get one warning IMO, and then banned if they repeat the offense. OS is more open ended though, so people can easily open another account, using a different email address to come back on board. I will admit I have alts in OS and SL that use different email addresses (a bunch for junk emails, mostly). The best we all can do collectively is to report abusers; Nico's suggestions to that end are spot on.

I remember when I first started opensim, there was a big hullabaloo going on with one of the grids maybe another having to do with child avis and other things. That really ruined it for the actual adult Ageplay community and how people see us because of mistakes from kids or chidl avatars. We dont know if they are adults behind those avatars or actual children, I think for safety concerns adult virtual worlds are not the best place for them.

I understand that. There used to be a designated area in SL for teens, but it closed due to lack of interest in sustaining it. It's sad that we have to deal with this nonsense. I think adults and kids can coexist in designated areas, that's what I think. I suppose I'd know better if I ran a grid or two, but I'd try it.

I get that. But I do think it's unfortunate. As mentioned earlier there are a number of reasons for someone playing a child avatar that do not represent anything "bad". However in RL most kids have parents and other adults in their lives. With everyone so scared of child avatar in whatever context it's disappointing for those child avatars that are treated like typhoid Mary.

Child AVs aren't prohibited in SL. What is prohibited is sexual behavior by child AVs. They are even allowed in places rated Mature and Adult, with some restrictions. There is a name for assigning guilt to a group of people because of the bad behavior of some. Prejudice. And I don't think that belongs in OS.

3 years ago, SL significantly reduced the children's grids, blocked many avatars and according to European law no children have anything to look for in adult regions, the time with hope hope riders is over, it's time to clean up this mess.

SL may have done that, but they did not change their policy about child avatars. The article, "the Linden Lab Official: Clarification of policy disallowing ageplay," includes a note:

Several websites offer a definition of age-play that aligns with the following. "Ageplay or age play is a form of roleplaying in which an individual acts or treats another as if they are a different age. Ageplay is roleplaying between adults, and involves consent from all parties. Ageplay is not necessarily sexual, but can be."
In Second Life, when a guy asked if I was really a female, I asked them, "are you really young, fit and hansome, and is your dick that big in RL?" Now, I don't need to ask people in OS if their AV's truly represent their RL age. And, for the most part, because our AVs do not represent our RL age, all of us in OS engage in a form of age-play, as defined above. And sometimes it's sexual.
Fortunately for all, the issue isn't about age-play, It's about sexual age-play with child AVs. The policy of Linden Lab is that sexual "ageplay" (depictions of, or engagement in, sexualized conduct with avatars that resemble children) violates their Community Standards.

So they try to impose a more restrictive policy in OS. And they are not beneath making false accusations to try to achieve their aim. They want to ban any and all child-AVs in OS. Quite simply -- it's not going to work.
What will work is for people to ban child AVs in their regions, What will work is grids ban the people on grids that do not ban child AVs. But paranoia, prejudice, and lying will not work.

Ok, I didn't use the "same words" you used.... but you did say it will work for grids to "ban the people on grids that do not ban child AVs" and tthen said that prejudice will noit work. Banning anyone that doesnt also ban child AVs is prejudicial. Some people may consider that acceptable - thats not in question. It may be considered a choice worth making. Whatever it's reason though - its prejudicial.

Yes, and people can act out of prejudice and do all the things I mentioned. That will work to keep child AVs off a particular region/grid. I didn't explain why that won't work to eliminate all child AVs in OS. One, it's doubtful every grid will do these things. Two, if someone wants to have a place for child AVs, they can start their own grid. It's been done, and more than once.

There was a whole SL blog about people choosing to portray child avatars as a part of therapy too. Folks who had suffered various abuses in their RL childhood and didn't really get a childhood were using the avatar to reconnect to a lost part of themselves and heal. Which I thought was beautiful.
Unfortunately like Glenys said below, people take advantage of the innocent intentions. As a role player I write characters of all ages. Kids to Seniors. And I have portrayed a child for PG rp and had people do or say gross things around those avatars. It can be hard to find a safe place to pursue that. I am predominantly an adult avatar everywhere and it bothers me when people do things like bring a kid av (and yes I mean an actual kid av, not just a shorter small to flat chested adult) to an obviously adult virtual space. Probably most of these are griefers but it's still not cool.

Very good list! Definately agree with number 6 - with the number of people against the idea of child avatars for any reason, many people wishing to play a child avatar are often left to do so with no company. In RL Children need adults. Finding adults willing to RP a family situation (a PG family I am talking about) is very hard.
Some years ago I have attempted to play a child avatar in both SL and OS and find someone to "adopt" me (I wont go into my personal reasons for wanting to try this). After weeks of looking and registering on some adoptoin agencies I found someone........ Turns out he was running a club and he wanted me to "entertain" his customers.............
So yeah..... it can be very hard to play a child for many reasons!

I understand your point, but my point is Ageplay is where you still look adult while portraying another age. Ageplay does not mean look like an actual real life child. people want to be a child avatar that's fine but that is not considered Ageplay.

Having taken your advice and gone away and done an albeit brief bit of research on the interwebs I can only conclude that it is you who misinformed. All the articles, both popular and academic, (and there are a lot of academic studies out there on this subject) refer to it as 'sexual ageplay'. You may disagree with that usage, but it seems that the usual interpretation is directly opposed to yours. For clarity my search terms were 'ageplay in virtual worlds' using the DuckDuckGo search engine on Brave Browser.
Whilst not generally related to the article above, let's also clarify some differences. According to the New World Notes article dated August 19, 2019:
"Unlike the United States (where the Supreme Court, in 2002, struck down a law prohibiting “virtual” child pornography on First Amendment free speech grounds), many countries criminalize non-photographic images that appear to depict minors in sexual situations."

Basically what this means is that two 'cartoon' child characters simulating sexual behaviour is legal, (if not wholesome, or even generally acceptable) so long as those behind the child avatars are adults themselves, i.e. over 18. However, the trouble lies in that not everywhere in the world is the USA, (and I have to stress ALL of my American friends have unhesitatingly said that they find sexual ageplay in virtual worlds both obscene and repugnant, regardless as to whether the avatars are cartoonish in appearance). Similar images would, in Germany and the UK see someone prosecuted with a serious crime, as images do not have to be photographic in order to trigger a prosecution.
My personal approach to child avatars is by all means have one, just don't visit my regions, or appear anywhere on OSGrid Plazas whilst I'm there because I will report it without hesitation. I think most regions in Opensim ban child avatars, partially through the creepiness factor. but also for those of us who have been here a while, the fallout from when the Meta7 grid collapsed in 2011 under somewhat mysterious circumstances, (ostensibly over a copyright claim by a company that came into existence after Meta7 - which just sounds a little weird). Meta7 was notorious for being very lax when it came to sexual ageplay, and that is allegedly why the grid had to close. Afterwards several Opensim grids revised their ToS to underline that they were not a haven for ex Meta7 refugees. Most of us subsequently have decided to play on the extremely safe side and have banned child avatars from our regions.
None of this is to undermine the possible benefits of adults using a child avatar as part of professionally guided therapy in order to work out traumas or other mental health issues stemming from childhood. But there is no need to for anyone to have a child avatar for general use, especially when all are 18+ in RL in any case

I think you hit the nail right on the head @Suzi_Avonside - to me it boils down to grids ToS, and respecting them when HGing. Some don't accept child-looking avis at all, some only on PG area.
The problem to me is when we move the conversation to 'legality' and 'morality' - because the narrative is flawed and inconsistent...and self-righteous inconsistency really bothers me, not matter the topic.
Example: Zoophilia is ALLOWED in SL. There are popular, fully 'ToS-complaint' seems like The Barn, focused on it. You can have sex with horses and dogs there. Yet zoophilia is illegal in most countries - as it's abusive to poor, defenseless, animals.
Same with Gor (as I mentioned somewhere else): it's RP based on slavery, rape, killing too. You can kill avis in SL if enabled in the region...
So my overall take on this conversation: Your grid, your rules. (i.e. Sexual AP not okay. Zoo not okay. Killing yes). But it will always be arbitrary. But people need to drop the whole 'morality' or 'legality' narrative.

I believe in the "real world" some "littles" (adults who may dress/act childish) may engage in "adult activities" but many others do not as they feel it doesnt feel right when they are in "littlespace". I think this just has to be right for the little and his/her caregiver and its noone elses business really. I've not really heard those who engage in this livestyle in RL call it "sexual ageplay" though. It's just "ageplay" (and whatever is done while engaging in that play).
Again though - I stress I am talking about adults engaging in RL roleplay such as Dom/little or Domme/little dynamics.

Virtual worlds may well have coined the term, but it is virtual worlds that are our point of reference here, and as you will be aware, some terminology has a different meaning depending on the context in which it is used. Therefore ageplay within virtual worlds involves child avatars, and sexual ageplay child avatars or child and adult avatars in sexual simulations. That ageplay might have a different meaning in a different context is neither here nor there - it is what it means within the metaverse that is under discussion here.

If its a couple of cartoon avatars - one (or more) with a child avatar - then yes. However, If its a couple of adult avatars - but one is wearing (for example) a pacifier and diaper (but still an adult avatar) then that is not "criminalised". There is no depiction of a child involved - just two adult avatars engaging in "whatever". I think THIS is (one example) of ageplay that Missresssdiagato is referring to (as opposed to actual child avatars).

The Wikipedia article basically contradicts the line you are drawing, and labels what you talk about as "Paraphilic Infantilism". The KEY part, in all of it is TWO CONSENTING ADULTS.

Of course it's two consenting adults, but portraying yourself as an actual child avatar in world doesn't make you an ageplayer. It's misrepresentation.
