I think that the fact that Medium has taken the article down says a lot in and of itself and everyone should be taking a step-back, turning the "save the children" pearl- clutching histrionics down to a 5-6 level instead of 11.

The author of the article (which is now gone from Medium, but available elsewhere) says that he has a HUD that can detect HUDs other users are wearing. However, a comment in the Reddit discussion of the article notes that this is not possible with an authorized viewer.
However, "Copybot viewers can, among other things, scan for worn huds. This is because that data is in fact sent to your viewer, but your viewer is just made to hide it due to LL rules. If you don't want to risk your account with illegal viewers, you can also run wireshark and verify for yourself that the data is in fact there."

A lot of the discussion here seems focused on ageplay in general (and for some strange reason, a lot of people seem focused on female breastsize):
The ageplay claim in the article are pretty atrocious, but that in and of itself should not be the issue. Look at the bigger picture here.
The issue is not that ageplay was occurring. Anyone who has spent more than six minutes in SL knows this exists and has existed. The real ugliness in this story (IF TRUE, which is very important to state right now) is that the guy basically in charge of running the Second Life side of Linden Lab, was not only involved in massive ageplay, but was running a system that was sweeping up a lot of innocent people and some not so innocent and banning them for what he himself was doing on a massive level! Once Ebbe passed and Oz Linden left, Second Life pretty much fell under Patch Linden, so this is not some low level manager here. And is it possible to believe that this was occurring and NO ONE else at LL management was aware of it? Possible I guess, but hard to imagine.
Also, even if you take away ALL the accusations of ageplay in the virtual world, i would argue that the other claims in the story are much worse than any virtual ageplay. I don't know about anyone else, but i dont want to be a part of a virtual world were the employees in charge of keeping it going are being harassed and having their jobs threatened and GOING HOME WITH BRUISES on them!. For me, that is far worse than any ageplay accusation and, again, how could it not have been known?
We certainly need to wait and see how much of these accusations, ifany, are real, but Patch and Loki are both wiping out all their Twitter/X accounts, as well as Instagram and Flikr accounts. That does not look good. Nor does Linden Lab saying it is going to investigate itself. That never works ...and also makes me think that this stuff was not going on in a vacuum.
For me, the ageplay is not the problem, but a biproduct of the real problem which is a huge fucking amount of hypocracy on the part of LL, especially in their management of SL. Also as bad is the possible workplace abuse that employees MAY have experienced.

Thank you, Ageplay is an adult fantasy- I would NEVER be interested in - when I wrote this I was thinking of Jamie's work with child avatars in Roleplay. Many roleplay groups have roles for children, there are no blurred lines. That is what offends me with Ageplay the blurred lines. One year Jamie Wright had a halloween themed region, I roleplayed little Col Sanders carrying a bucket of fried chicken to trick or treat at her place, does that count lol

The issue with people using child avatars for sexual age play is often that it paints EVERYONE who uses a child avatar with the same brush because people start to assume. It also make virtual spaces feel unsafe for the innocent character developement of story that involves all ages of characters. Because if people are going to abuse that in that way it's just creates a bad feeling for everyone. There's also a sick feeling and fear that someone who would portray it virtually might be capable of hurting a RL child. And I'm not talking about two adults where one wears a schoolgirl outfit or uses a pacifier. I mean an adult depicted with a child. Again, just so many bad feelings. I wish it wasn't the case at all. And I appreciate the breakdown. Thank you.

I'm not saying there is no validity to what you are saying - but I would question the "of they will do it in virtual they are likely to do it in RL" idea used here. I know you didn't exactly say this is the case - but it is a common feeling. What I would say is that if we are going to use this kind of reasoning then combat RP games should be out too. I mean if you're going to shoot someone with a gun in virtual, maybe you will in RL!
I am sure some would say this isnt the same thing - but I maintain that the whole "if you will do it in virtual maybe you will do it in RL" is fundamentally flawed.
Note that I am not saying that someone doing anything in virtual CANT do it in RL, but just that its a bit of a jump and often unfounded.

I'd like to caution people about engaging MD about her definition of sexual ageplay in the virtual world not being ageplay, because one of the AVs represents a child. I've had a lengthy discussion with her about this claim, and when she was proven wrong, about her series of follow-up claims, all of which I also proved wrong. That still did not change her denial that sex between an adult and a child AV is sexual age-play. You if want to waste your time with her, feel free, But you will not convince her.
MD has a clear agenda to protect the RL age play community. However, what she says about RL age play does not apply to this virtual world, where adult-age players can do sexual-age play with child AVs. If she wants to convince anyone of her idiosyncratic idea, she should try the RL authorities that prosecute virtual sexual age-play between an adult and child AV.

I "think" shes just trying - as you say - to protect the idea of RL Age Play. With all this going on - most people don't realise that "RL AgePlay" - while maybe on the fringe" is perfectly legal as its two adults doing a RP that may or may not be sexual. In RL ofc - neither of them suddenly look like a child. They are clearly two adults RPing between themselves.

The (very small) migration of Second Life users to Open Sim and or other platforms is due, in part, because the users have been banned due to alleged age-play, in some instances, unfairly. And even if that alone didn't make this article relevant to people in OS, it provides information useful to people trying to prevent age-play.
First, an all ages place can use a HUD that scans the HUDs other people are using and ban anyone using an impregnation HUD or the like. Second the article provides a model for what the age-play police can do to document the problem on these grids.

This stuff has been going on for years. Back in the day when I was in SL and had never heard of OS, I had a large, successful rental property with 80 apartments, 12 sky boxes, cottages, and a castle in the sky which stayed rented. I think people who have rentals probably see a lot more than the average person. I did. Some of my tenants made me feel uncomfortable so I would keep an eye on them and at the same time, try to respect their privacy. Some of the people that engage in these disgusting behaviors are stupid besides being perves and would use local for their emotes and chat and THAT is what revealed what was happening on my property. They would get the boot and a report and ban and no refund :). Second Life has known about this crap for years. Sadly, it has taken someone going public to finally get their attention. I agree, Open Sim will likely experience some blowback. But then again, don't think for a moment it isn't happening here. It is really sad because it would be really cute to create a little avatar to "play" one's child, which is innocent and a lot of people like to do it, but because of idiots, it is probably best to just avoid all child avatars and forgo family roleplay because the pervs have ruined it. I hope something is finally done about it and real-life consequences happen for those involved because if they are doing it in virtual... :( :( :(

Personally, i have no problem with young or child like avatars. (The really small looking ones with the giant heads creep me the hell out, but to each his own. If someone wants to make their avi look young, then great. I see it as no different than being a furry or robot or whatever you want to be. I try to be respectful to everyone and their right to have the virtual life they want for themself. A young looking avatar is not an issue. Even a young looking naked avitar in and of itself is not an issue... but don't be showing up in bondage gear and giving out oral sex. Then we have a problem.
As I said, I think LL has only themselves to blame here. Their TOS has been so overwritten yet extremely vague on this issue for years. The end result is people who are behaving badly can skirt by (especially if they are Lindens apparently) and a lot of innocent people get swepped up in what is a very vague and unmodertated system.
If LL wanted to, they could solve this problem easily. There are "adult" virtual worlds that do it all the time. I think you would need to take two, possibly three, steps:
1. Fix the broken height slider, which has been off wrong from the get-go anyway. Set a standard ACCURATE height and don't let allow only minimal adjustment either way. That largely fixes the problem AND makes for a better all-around experience. No small mesh bodies like Tweenster or mesh body workarounds are allowed. I hate that, but I don't see a way around it at this point.
2. Throw out the long and vague wording in the TOS on the subject and make it clear and simple: "Any representation of a person engaging in sexual activity with an underage person, either visual or text, is prohibited. Any possession of or display of such a representation is also prohibited".
3. Bring back the youth grid for people who are under 18 in RL.
Done.
This article is going to draw a lot of bad attention to SL. I am sure their owners at the hedge fund and JPMorgan are not happy and the fact that LL is a registered financial institution will add gas to this fire. That makes me sad because overall SL is a wonderful place full of wonderful people, just like OS is. As I have shown the solutions are pretty easy to fix, but only if someone really wants to fix them.

I've now read the entire article. Towards the end of it, it started to look the author, Robert Barrows, was writing a hit piece on Patch Linden as a result of a personal vendetta. However, if the allegations Barrows makes are substantiated, the motives of the author for writing the article don't matter. The truth does.

I've not yet read the whole article. My impression so far is that its deeply researched and seems to uncover some disturbing information about LL employees participation in, or allowance of, sexual age-play. As many will tell you that LL can be very good at finding age players when they want to, and not finding them at all when they don't want to.
The article provides some useful information for all-age places that want to root out sexual age-players. Use a HUD that detects what HUDs other AVs are using. There is no reason for underage-looking AVs to be using an impregnation HUD.

Unfortunately, unless sim owners use a completely warped definition of what's "underage-looking" and what isn't. Already now, female avatars are considered underage if they wear too bright colours, or if they've got freckles, probably even if they're wearing flat sneakers instead of the usual 6' spike heels.

Well, it should put places that allow child AV on notice that they need to make sure to check that kid AVs are not using an impregnation HUD.

I believe that the time for Child and Teen Avs is past , the time of recapturing the past innocence is gone it has be corrupted by Pervs and Child Abusers. I have pulled all petite clothing from all the regions I control.

There was a similar sense of concern when Meta 7 closed in 2011. Many Opensim grids reviewed and made it clear in their ToS that child sexual ageplay was unacceptable and it partially the reason why so many grids ban child avatars. Easier to just avoid the risk.

I was in OS when Meta closed. Many users came to OSG and repeated the same behavior that lead to Meta 7 bring closed. This lead to the child AV panic still going on to this day.

I made the mistake of visiting Meta7 once, I never went again. The given reason for Meta7 being closed always seemed a bit suspect to me, another company using a logo similar to Meta7 claiming copyright issues when Meta7 predated both the other company and their use of a similar logo? Seemed a bit strange to me, but paedo stuff, well there you go, that's why, eh?
