In Memory of J. Wallace

Today I learned that my friend J. Wallace passed away in June 2024.

J was more than a friend. He was a contributing writer for my Climate of Our Future blog and someone whose passion for our oceans was truly inspiring. One of the stories he often spoke about was Adelita, the remarkable loggerhead sea turtle whose incredible journey across the Pacific helped change our understanding of sea turtle migration forever.

Years ago I created LivBlue at Great Canadian Grid as a tribute to J's work and his dedication to our oceans. When that grid closed, LivBlue found a new home on 3HG, where it continues to celebrate marine life and ocean conservation.

In his memory, I have created the Adelita Choker, a silver sea turtle necklace inspired by the grace, endurance, and extraordinary journey of Adelita. I hope it serves as a small reminder that one person's passion can inspire others for years to come.

From here it will be possible to restart a region. Depending on your configuration of simulators this will either restart or shutdown - if its set to shutdown you need something else to start your region back up (monit is a good option).

Also OARs will be downloadable and uploadable from here. Due to the risks of operations like OAR backups / restores they will be configuable by constants on the config.php with at least restores disabled by default.

Still deciding what other tools to build in here.

There will also be some estate wide tools but that's not been started at all.

Map tiles are cached and not updated unless you request new ones. As they are calculated based on region size and downloaded in 256x256 chunks and stitched together getting them fresh each time is "expensive" especially on regions like the 4096x4096 I tested - thats a lot of chunks!

Created a SummerGown with texture changing to various Hibiscus prints. This is my first real rigged mesh that I created solely, I am wearing Athena Avatar and the Body HUD works with it to alpha the parts. I included the Shape I used in Avastar to get a good fit. It is in the Waves of Courage surf shop for those who want to try it. The shape is in Contents of the Dress.

NewLifeItaly: a new generation of OpenSim grid

NewLifeItaly continues to grow and evolve into something much bigger than a simple OpenSim grid.

Today, NewLifeItaly is a complete digital ecosystem made of a web portal, user profiles, community tools, events, videochat, land management, administrative tools, notifications, social content, and services directly connected to the virtual world.

The goal is clear: to give users a simpler, more modern and engaging experience, while also giving the staff stronger, more organized and professional tools to manage the entire infrastructure.

The portal allows users to manage their personal profile, update their profile picture and cover image, publish posts, comment, react, share updates and take part in the community even outside the viewer. The internal feed brings NewLifeItaly closer to a modern social platform, but built around the virtual world and the life of the grid.

One of the most important parts of the project is land management.

Users who own or rent a land no longer have only a space inside the grid, but also a dedicated area inside the portal. From there, they can view information about their land, manage details connected to their space, connect events to their area and promote the activities they organize.

This means that a land is no longer just a place accessible from the viewer. It becomes a space that can also be managed from the web. The land owner or manager can have a clearer view of their environment, promote events, keep information updated and use the portal as a central point of reference for their activity inside NewLifeItaly.

On the administrative side, the portal provides the Owner and staff with an advanced panel for managing the grid. This is not just about editing text or approving content: the admin panel is designed to control real operational parts of the infrastructure.

The Owner can manage users, roles, lands, simulators, events, assignments, videochat, messages sent to the grid and maintenance tools. The administrative land management area gives a clearer overview of the configured simulators, regions and operational status of the services connected to the grid.

An important technical part is the management of server processes connected to OpenSim. The system is designed to work with tmux sessions, allowing the grid services to be managed in a more organized way, even after server reboots or maintenance operations.

In practical terms, the admin panel can help the Owner manage operations such as:

preparing tmux sessions;
starting the Robust service;
starting OpenSim simulators;
checking configured lands;
restarting specific regions;
managing operations after a server reboot in a cleaner and safer way.

The system does not start everything at once in a chaotic way. To avoid sudden CPU and memory overload, lands can be started sequentially, one region at a time, with controlled pauses between each startup. This is essential in an OpenSim grid, because starting many simulators at the same time can overload the server and cause instability.

Robust can also be managed in a more controlled way: the panel allows the correct service path to be configured and started before the simulators, following the proper OpenSim infrastructure order. First the core grid services are started, then the regions are brought online.

This makes administration much safer than a fully manual workflow. The Owner no longer has to remember commands, paths and sessions every time. The portal becomes an organized control center, reducing errors and saving time during maintenance.

The event system is another central part of the platform. Events can be created, imported, approved, assigned to specific lands and connected to the videochat. They can also be displayed in-world through dedicated boards, creating a direct bridge between the web portal and the virtual world.

The NewLifeItaly videochat is connected to the portal through automatic login. Logged-in users can enter without needing a second login, while keeping their nickname, role and profile image synchronized. This creates continuity between the portal, the community and the chat, making the experience smoother and more integrated.

A messaging system from the portal to the grid has also been implemented, allowing users to send messages to avatars through a dedicated relay. This means the portal is not separate from the virtual world: it becomes a real operational bridge connected to OpenSim.

The project also includes real-time notifications, post sharing, optimized image management, light and dark theme, more complete profiles, social tools, event support, videochat integration and features designed to improve both the user experience and the work of the staff.

From a technical point of view, NewLifeItaly has been built with a modular and scalable structure. The portal communicates with the grid, the videochat, the event system, land management, profiles, the social feed, notifications and administrative tools. This makes it possible to keep adding new features over time without rebuilding everything from scratch.

An important role in this evolution is played by the partnership with Hexivia, which supports NewLifeItaly in technical development, service integration, portal design and the growth of its digital infrastructure. This collaboration was created to bring increasingly modern, stable and professional tools to the grid.

NewLifeItaly is becoming a complete platform: a virtual community with social tools, land management for users, advanced control for the Owner, events, videochat, web services, grid integrations and an administrative panel designed to make everything more efficient.

It is not just a grid.
It is an ecosystem in constant evolution.

What started as “just building a little Japanese garden” slowly turned into something much deeper. This place wasn’t made from perfection. It was made from feeling.

Following instinct instead of a plan.

People sometimes ask why virtual worlds matter so much to us.
