BE AWARE IF YOU USE SSD'S. An SSD can randomly go into a complete shut down and lock ALL DATA on the drive out. You won't be able to access that ssd ever again. In my case it was a SAMSUNG 870. Well, I had made several beautiful oars... but I had a drive crash... well actually, an ssd crash. very unexpected as it was a samsung 870. but when i say crash what happened was it totally locked up the ssd. I mean totally. Everything is completely not accessible. At least with a hard drive if you have a crash you can recover most of your files. But apparently not with this ssd. It's beyond crazy they don't make people aware that an ssd can lock up like this for no apparent reason. I'm afraid to say I've lost all my work. Not surprising I suppose. I really don't know what happened, everything was fine when I went to bed, and I woke up the next day and the ssd is electronically locked and cannot be accessed by any computer. I even tried a special device I ordered from amazon. Nope. I never knew this could happen. It's very disheartening to have technical troubles of this magnitude coupled with the negativity from the trolls... so... I just left the grids for months. I may come back one day and try to rebuild everything. But it's a monumental task. I spent so long creating all those beautiful places... Only to have them completely destroyed by a complete ssd lock. I should point out I was running samsung magician and there was NOTHING wrong with the ssd at all... Nothing was reported by magician except that the ssd was in GREAT SHAPE.

Maybe Xenon, let me try to send this to samsung and see if they can fix it first. Plus the break is doing me a lot of good.

What a disaster to lose all your creations, I can only imagine all the work you see flying away :'( I thought that when dying SSDs only went into read-only mode... Is it in "Great shape"? Does that mean it is still usable but empty? I dare to advise you like others to contact Samsung but it may be expensive... I hope for a miracle or that you will "digest" this loss. Anyway you see that there are many of us who are in solidarity with you.

No, what I meant to say is this. Samsung magician software said the status of the ssd was great, no problems or issues of any kind. Next morning... The ssd is totally locked. no access. no read or write. Just completely bricked. It's very weird.

Cyber, how devastating! I pray you're able to yet rescue this lost data, maybe by sending it in for repair like Jared and others have suggested below.

Have you tried contacting Samsung direct. I had this happen to a few year old SSD and sent it in to Samsung they sent it back fixed!

Jared I didn't know you could send it into Samsung like that. Is there a procedure or addresss? or just send it to samsung general address? I will try this, if you do still happen to have the address you sent it to, that would be awesome. Hopefully maybe they can fix it.

Kiss Cyber, and... sorry, but truth is: samsung 870 id "best saling", "excelent for you" etc. promotion tricks. This is NOT quality product. Sorry again.

*hugs* That happens to us every 6 months or so. Our SSD drives really take a beating. They live fast and die young. I make daily and other periodic backups to several mechanical drives. Don't worry about the trolls. I just read a french book La Mariecomo. It's about a powerful witch that works to make life good, and the weather fair for farmers and fishermen, etc.. And everywhere she travels, no one knows who she is, what she does for them, and they are mean to her. But she knows who she is, and is happy and free, and keeps going. The stupid little people are to be pitied and cared for anyway. Such is the lot of magicians in that world and this world. lol

This sounds like an interesting story! There are themes like that within the heroic story arc in The Expanse and Babylon 5 as well. The ultimate hero: someone who sacrifices themselves for the betterment of others and not only receives no recognition for it, but is villainized for their efforts. It's a bittersweet tale.

It sucks but yes, SSD's do fail catastrophically when it is their time. I've had it happen to a couple but had fortunately also put the more important file on a sata drive as a backup to the backup. I empathize with your pain though as I lost a few nice regions years ago that were on a computer that got wet and I was not able to recover them from that.

Hard drives usually have a warning that they are "degrading" and you can have time to take stuff on. However, SSDs being "solid state" have a finite amount of read/writes - and once that happens - they are usually completely dead. I know it doesnt help - but the only protection is "backup". No good after the fact though :( As JayR says its possible something can be done but sounds like requires a specialist = expensive.

Hi there Cyber, it is possible the controller chip is bad, or one of the surrounding capacitors has shorted, thus causing the issue, requiring a skilled technology electronic expert to repair.
