When I first started creating jewelry I discovered that I could use the dingbat fonts for neat jewelry parts. You have to make sure you have permissions especially if you plan to sell the jewelry. Dingbats have all sorts of cool shapes for creating. There are a few steps to make the mesh solid when viewing from a distance. will definitely check this out. i've been using inkscape to create the text, then break it into paths and export svg. import into blender. but your way looks better
