Note to all regarding bug splat crashes
I have visited at length with Josh Boam, owner of Hosting4opensim and Aviworlds. I have also done hundreds of tests.
Sometimes the test results are not what we expect. In this situation, the results are not always logical.
What you have to realize is things can affect your viewer one day, and not at all on the next.
This is super frustrating!!!!!!!
As an example, Monday I crashed 15 times on the new sand dune area at friends V. On Thursday , I came back and never crashed……100 laps….200mph….ultra ….1024 draw. I tried like heck….I could not crash. Pin and Reggie were also racing with me……Reggie had 2 crashes, Pin had one…… but nothing like the nonstop crashes on Monday.
I decided to try a new land layout , so I loaded a new raw file and placed a few mesh hills on it. I instantly crashed even at slow speeds.
I share this so you understand that what happens one day may or may not happen the next.
Do I care about bug splats? Yesssss
I still want you to let me know if you get more than one.
Now I want to share some thoughts from Josh Boam. Josh is not perfect, but he is highly intelligent on the subject. Josh feels
* 99% certain it is a viewer issue….but we are still watching and testing
* Happens to him too at aviworlds, some days not at all, some days bad. Happens to other friends at osg sometimes
* He understands that this is a Firestorm issue. He has used other browsers and not had issues
* Firestorm is supposed to be correcting things on next release…..we will see
* He said the issue is related to the amount of mesh in a area and how firestorm “sees” that mesh
* You could enter a region with no mesh objects and bug splat……if so, take a look at what you and others are wearing.
* The more mesh in an area, the more likely to have firestorm viewer issues
* This is NOT related to our system backups…… we back up every hour on the hour.
* The more grid hopping we do, the more likely we are to get corruption in our cache
* I love to grid hop…..so might have to do the total clean more than once
Solutions
1. Try using a viewer other than firestorm if you want. Please report any results to me………or
2. An in depth cache cleaning if you prefer to use Firestorm. To do this you need to do a full uninstall of firestorm when not using it. Follow these steps: *push windows key plus r This will open the run box. Now type %appdata% in the run box and enter. Delete any folder in that related to viewer. after deleting all these files reinstall firestorm, add grid again. If you have friends avi, and start firestorm.
Some parts of this still make no sense, such as the fact that I have mesh on Friends I, but not crashed there.
Realize that open sim is a delicate balance of your system, your connection, the server, the software and the viewer.
We are doing our best to get you more answers. Please try these things and let me know results.
Communication is important…..I need to know what is happening .
Josh and I are monitoring and testing….but we need your help!
I appreciate you all!
