Nach deren Implosion 1978 war John Lydon, ehemals Johnny Rotten, desillusioniert von der kommerziellen Vereinnahmung des Punk. Er gründete PiL nicht nur als Band, sondern als „Firma“ – Public Image Ltd. – ein bewusster Akt, um die kreative und finanzielle Kontrolle zurückzugewinnen.
