Die Geschichte von The Cure begann nicht als solche, sondern unter dem Namen Malice, eine Band, die 1976 von einigen Schulfreunden in Crawley im Süden Englands gegründet wurde. Im Zentrum stand dabei stets der junge Robert Smith, der von Anfang an eine zentrale Rolle einnahm. Die B-52’s, eine Band, deren Name sofort Bilder von hochgetürmten Frisuren und unkonventionellen Tanz-Rock-Hymnen heraufbeschwört, fanden ihren Ursprung im Jahr 1976 in der pulsierenden Musikszene von Athens, Georgia.
