One of the most exhausting emotional states is cognitive empathy. This rare ability prevents you from completely hating someone, even when they've destroyed you. Because instead of fixating on the act itself, you see the story behind it. You understand the wounds that shaped them, the unmet needs that drove them, the vulnerabilities that led them to hurt you. While many would say, "They hurt me, period," you add, "Yes, but I understand why." And that's where it becomes a burden. Because you carry two weights at once: the pain of what was done to you, and the clarity to understand why it was done to you. It sounds noble, but in everyday life, it's a trap. You forgive too easily. You stay too long in relationships that don't respect you. You make excuses for your parents, your partner, your friends, for people who disappoint you… because you see beyond their actions, you see their wounds. But here's the paradox: understanding doesn't mean excusing. Yes, a violent father may have been broken in his childhood. Yes, an unfaithful partner may be hiding an inner void. Yes, a toxic friend is surely lost themselves. All of this can make sense. But having an explanation never transforms a wound into something just. Society loves to tell you: "Put yourself in their shoes, be understanding." But rarely is it asked: "And who puts themselves in your shoes?" You spend your life trying to understand others, and deep down, your greatest dream would be that one day, someone would understand you with the same intensity. Cognitive empathy is therefore a gift, but also a burden. It elevates you above binary judgment, but it also condemns you to live with pain you can never transform into liberating anger. You remain suspended between forgiveness and the scar. The truth is, you have to learn to draw a line: understanding, yes. But respecting yourself, first.

L’un des états émotionnels les plus épuisants, c’est la cognitive empathie. Cette faculté rare qui empêche de haïr totalement quelqu’un, même quand il t’a détruit. Parce que toi, au lieu de rester bloqué sur le geste, tu vois l’histoire derrière. Tu comprends les blessures qui l’ont façonné, les manques qui l’ont poussé, les failles qui l’ont conduit à t’abîmer.
Alors que beaucoup diraient : « Il m’a fait mal, point », toi tu rajoutes : « Oui, mais je comprends pourquoi ». Et c’est là que ça devient un fardeau. Parce que tu portes deux poids à la fois : la douleur de ce qu’on t’a fait, et la lucidité de comprendre pourquoi on te l’a fait.
Ça paraît noble, mais dans le quotidien, c’est un piège. Tu pardonnes trop vite. Tu restes trop longtemps dans des relations qui ne te respectent pas. Tu trouves des excuses à tes parents, à ton partenaire, à tes amis, aux gens qui te déçoivent… parce que tu vois au-delà de leurs actes, tu vois leurs blessures.
Mais voilà le paradoxe : comprendre ne signifie pas excuser. Oui, un père violent a peut-être été brisé dans son enfance. Oui, une partenaire infidèle cache peut-être un vide intérieur. Oui, un ami toxique est sûrement lui-même perdu. Tout ça peut avoir du sens. Mais avoir une explication ne transforme jamais une blessure en quelque chose de juste.
La société adore te dire : « Mets-toi à sa place, sois compréhensif ». Mais rarement on te dit : « Et toi, qui se met à ta place ? » Tu passes ta vie à comprendre les autres, et au fond, ton plus grand rêve serait qu’un jour, quelqu’un te comprenne avec la même intensité.
L’empathie cognitive, c’est donc un don, mais aussi une croix. Elle t’élève au-dessus du jugement binaire, mais elle te condamne aussi à vivre avec des douleurs que tu n’arrives jamais à transformer en colère libératrice. Tu restes suspendu entre le pardon et la cicatrice.
La vérité, c’est qu’il faut apprendre à poser une frontière : comprendre, oui. Mais se respecter, d’abord.
