Steven Siro Vai, geboren am 6. Juni 1960 in Carle Place, Long Island, New York, zeigte bereits in jungen Jahren eine tiefe Verbindung zur Musik. Als eines von fünf Geschwistern in einer typischen, eng verbundenen italienisch-katholischen Familie entdeckte er die Musik schon mit vier Jahren, als er ein Klavier in der Wohnung seiner Tante erkundete. Seine musikalische Reise begann ernsthaft mit sieben Jahren, als er seine erste Band gründete. Ein entscheidender Moment war der Kauf von Frank Zappas Album „Freak Out“, das sein Verständnis von Musik revolutionierte.
