“Hello little one,” Maeia addressed the apparition waiting for her. The girl appeared prepubescent, with long dark hair and stunning gold eyes. She didn’t answer, gazing instead into Maeia’s face with shameless curiosity. “You’re a little bold for a phasma,” Maeia continued, using the name her order called these embodied memories. Other phasma continued to walk near them and through them.

“And what would your name be if you were real, I wonder?” Maeia asked, not expecting an answer. Sure enough, she didn’t get one, just more of the same intensely curious stare. “Well, regardless, lead on, take me where you will.”

I’ll call you Leta, she thought to herself, the hidden one.

Leta turned to go, and without looking, reached out her left hand to take Maeia’s in hers. Maeia froze in stunned amazement, staring down at the small hand in hers.

I can feel her hand, she thought. That shouldn’t be possible.
