The grid is definitively closed due to a bad manipulation on the databases, we have tried everything to try to repair but it turns out to be impossible, in the absence of exploitable asset backup, from February 20, 2022 at 6:35 p.m., the gate is officially closed, we are sorry for the inconvenience, we ask you all to stop your automatic payments and all donations!!!

There are lots of OpenSim users with top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art machines with a high-end Nvidia gaming graphics card running Windows 11 who complain about Firestorm 7 being terribly slow. In comparison with Firestorm 6 even.

I have hardware that was upper-mid-range in 2018 with AMD graphics running Debian GNU/Linux. I've got nothing to complain about how Firestorm 7 is performing. (Of course, literally nobody here will believe me.)

This either means that I've hit a sweet spot in combining hardware and software. And that the combination of a top-range Intel i9 CPU, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Ti and Windows 11 is actually objectively slower than the combination of an eight-year-old six-core AMD Ryzen CPU, and AMD Radeon RX 590 and Debian. At least when running Firestorm.

Or this means that everyone else considers a two-digit frame rate a slideshow whereas I've happily capped my frame rate at 30.

What I can comprehend even less is that single-threaded Firestorm 6 is supposed to be faster than multi-threaded Firestorm 7 on a CPU with 12, 16, 24 or more threads.

All I ever did when I was here was build, create magic huds, create oars, and try to help people. I was harassed a lot by a band of trolls, constantly picked on and lied on by others who will say and post and do anything. Even fake made up stuff. Many of you have asked me to come back and keep creating. I will think about it. I did have some more oars I designed and it would be a shame to see them languish on an old hard drive and not get shared. I'm not sure if they survived the last ssd failure on my system. But to date they have not been seen by anyone but me. Perhaps I will come back in a few weeks. I am thinking about it - in the very least to upload the other fantasy oars I have made if they survived.

2days after, 13 august, unfortunately the Opensim gallery that I started on Flickr was deleted by Flickr for investigation on a complaint from a person.
What I can say is that I am asking Flickr for an investigation, that it will take several days, but that it will not stop me in my project, so we will continue to take photos and fill this gallery or another one. NOTHING and no one will stop me from doing it.

Why Never Neverworld.

There is something particularly bleak about a community calling itself “The Friendly Grid” while apparently treating abusive behaviour as a problem best solved by telling the person on the receiving end: “You have a mute button.” Welcome to Neverworld Grid, where, judging by my experience, “friendly” may be less a standard of conduct than a decorative slogan attached to the front door.

I was a DJ in a virtual worlds for years lately as a visiting performer at Neverworld. By the point this incident occurred, however, my personal circumstances had changed. I am dying. That is not written for melodrama or sympathy. It matters because it explains what it cost me physically to be there at all. Despite being seriously ill and largely confined to bed, I got out of bed and DJed one final event to say thank you to my audience for supporting me and to draw people in one last time, which also helped to promote Neverworld Grid.

The reward was memorable, although perhaps not in quite the way their promotional department might prefer. During the event, I was verbally attacked and abused by a member of Neverworld Grid.

Behind every avatar is a human being. The fact that an interaction takes place in a virtual world does not make the behaviour, or its effect on another person, imaginary. The following day, despite the physical toll, I got out of bed again and raised a formal complaint with the owner of Neverworld Grid. I expected, at minimum, the complaint to be taken seriously. What I encountered instead was dismissal. No action was taken against the resident. My complaint was pretty much ignored and seen as nothing other than an interpersonal issue despite the fact I was a victim of one of their residents.

And then came this: “You have a mute button.”

And there, in five small words, lies the much larger problem. Of course I have a mute button. A mute button is a useful tool for an individual. It is not a substitute for moderation. Those are two entirely different things. A mute button allows the recipient to stop hearing somebody's behaviour. Moderation determines whether that behaviour is acceptable within the community in the first place. Confusing the two produces a wonderfully convenient system for administrators: the offender remains, the complainant makes them disappear from view, and management is spared the disagreeable business of actually managing anything. Problem solved. Well, invisible, which is apparently close enough. Imagine applying this philosophy anywhere else. Someone behaves disgracefully in a cinema and the management responds: 'you can use ear-plugs.' One can only admire the efficiency. No difficult confrontation. No standards requiring enforcement. No possibility of upsetting a patron who may have a life-time ticket. Just mute and carry on.

Neverworld Grid presents itself with the tagline: “The friendly grid.” That is precisely why this incident matters. If you advertise friendliness as part of your identity, then friendliness ceases to be merely a pleasant aspiration. It becomes a claim about the community you operate. And claims should survive contact with reality. A genuinely friendly community is not one in which nobody ever behaves badly. Such a place does not exist outside advertising copy and unusually optimistic children's television. A friendly community is one in which antisocial behaviour is taken seriously when it occurs. It is demonstrated by what administrators do when unfriendliness becomes inconvenient. That is the test. Not the logo. Not the website. Not the slogan. Not smiling avatars standing beneath carefully selected promotional photographs. The test comes when somebody crosses the line and management has to decide whether its proclaimed standards actually mean anything.

In my case, I believe Neverworld Grid failed that test spectacularly. I cannot state why the owner chose not to take action. Only the owner can answer that. But users are entitled to ask uncomfortable questions when enforcement appears absent.

What behaviour actually results in consequences?
Does a resident's financial contribution affect how complaints concerning them are handled?
Are paying residents subject to precisely the same behavioural standards as visitors are?
What happens after a formal complaint?
And perhaps most importantly: What behaviour would actually be serious enough for Neverworld Grid management to intervene rather than telling the recipient, “You have a mute button”? These are questions created by the apparent absence of action. If Neverworld Grid wants people to believe that payment of tier guarantees renters a friendly safe place, there is a very simple way of showing it: Have standards and apply them.

There is another unpleasant implication to the “you have a mute button” response. It transfers responsibility. The person accused of behaving abusively does not apparently need to change their behaviour. Instead, the person experiencing it must change theirs. You must mute. You must avoid. You must adapt. Management remains comfortably above the unpleasantness while the individual affected quietly rearranges their virtual existence around somebody else's deplorable conduct. That isn't moderation. It is outsourcing moderation to the victim. And it creates an obvious incentive for the worst personalities in any community: behave however you please as long as you keep paying. Eventually you can achieve the remarkable distinction of being peacefully surrounded by people who either tolerate you or cannot see or hear you. Community harmony, achieved through selective deafness as decreed by management.

There is another aspect of this which a mute button cannot undo: the physical effect of the encounter has already happened. Verbal abuse is not experienced solely as words arriving through speakers or appearing on a screen. Human beings respond physically to confrontation and distress. The body does not first consult the graphics card to determine whether an attack is sufficiently real to react to it. For a healthy person, that reaction can be deeply unpleasant. For somebody who is dying, already seriously ill and functioning with greatly diminished reserves, the consequences of that stress can carry considerably greater weight and could even be the last stress that body can take. And once that distress has occurred, telling the person “you have a mute button” is not a remedy.

The button cannot take you backwards in time. It cannot prevent the encounter that already happened. It cannot erase the stress already inflicted. And it certainly cannot answer the question of why the behaviour that caused the complaint apparently attracted no consequence. There is a peculiar cruelty in dismissing that distinction which no amount of virtual-world branding can disguise.

I did not expect sainthood. I did not expect somebody to erect a statue of my avatar outside the welcome centre. I expected basic human decency and a complaint to be treated seriously.

Apparently that must be the 'Super Ultimate Friend of the Owner' premium feature. Neverworld Grid calls itself friendly. People considering investing their time, creativity, communities and money there should understand what “friendly” meant when my complaint was placed in front of its owner. Because communities reveal themselves not through their slogans but through the behaviour they are prepared to tolerate. Anybody can write: “We are the friendly grid.” The interesting question is what happens when somebody isn't friendly. In my experience, the answer was depressingly simple: Nothing. The complaint was effectively binned. Apparently making bad actors into clouds is your only option meanwhile Management avoided doing anything meaningful other than preserve a monthly tier payment. And the slogan will survive. Perhaps that is the most impressive achievement of all. In virtual worlds, apparently even irony can be rendered in 3D.

Neverworld Grid also seems very keen on telling people that it isn't Second Life.

Second Life gets plenty of criticism, some of it deserved. One complaint you hear is that region owners can make their own rules and, if you don't follow them, eject or ban you. That can certainly be irritating. People can make ridiculous rules. People can throw you out for reasons you think are unfair. Give somebody control over a virtual patch of land and occasionally they begin behaving as though Buckingham Palace has asked for the keys back. But there is another side to it. If you enter somebody's region, you know they have rules and that breaking them can have consequences. If you behave badly enough, somebody can actually do something about it. After my experience with Neverworld Grid, I find myself wondering why removing that is supposed to be an improvement. If the alternative to somebody saying “These are the rules here” is somebody behaving abusively and the person being abused getting told “You have a mute button,” which system is actually friendlier?

There has to be some middle ground between petty little dictators throwing people off regions because they don't like the colour of their shoes and a free-for-all where nobody wants to intervene.
Rules can be abused. So can the absence of rules. The difference is that when there are sensible community standards, ordinary people know where they stand. Don't abuse people. Don't deliberately disrupt things. Don't make somebody else's experience miserable. Hardly tyranny. And if somebody does cross those lines, there should be consequences. Neverworld seems to dislike the way people in Second Life exercise control over their own regions. Fine. But what is being offered instead? If the answer is greater freedom, then whose freedom are we talking about? The freedom of somebody to enjoy an event without being abused? Or the freedom of somebody to behave however they like without anybody in authority becoming involved? Because those freedoms collide eventually. Mine did. And apparently I had a mute button.

Then there is the question of tier. People pay to be on grids like this. That makes it reasonable to ask whether somebody who keeps paying can expect considerably more tolerance than somebody who just visits but still contributes to the success of the grid. I cannot prove that this is what happened in my case. But the response I received certainly gives me reason to ask. If somebody pays tier and behaves disgracefully, what happens? Are they warned? Are there consequences? Or does everybody they upset simply get reminded where the mute button is? Because if the practical message becomes: Pay your tier and management will look the other way, then who exactly does that attract? Most decent people don't need immunity from basic standards of behaviour. Creators don't need it. DJs don't need it. People running events don't need it. People who simply want somewhere pleasant to spend a few hours don't need it. The people who benefit most from a place where bad behaviour carries few consequences are, rather obviously, the people most likely to behave badly. That seems an extraordinary foundation for something calling itself “The Friendly Grid.”

There is nothing wrong with wanting to be different from Second Life. But different does not automatically mean better. If Second Life says, in effect, “behave yourself here or somebody may throw you out,” while Neverworld's answer to abuse is “you have a mute button,” I know which approach now looks more like a community and which looks more like an incompetent Management avoidance strategy. Being different is easy. Being better requires rather more than a tagline. If Neverworld Grid believes this account misrepresents its standards, it can explain them.

What happens when someone reports serious verbal abuse? What behaviour actually results in action?
Are paying residents treated exactly the same as everyone else? And why was “You have a mute button” considered an adequate response to my complaint?

Those answers would tell people considerably more about Neverworld Grid than any slogan ever could.
Until then, perhaps the tagline deserves a small amendment:

“Neverworld Grid — The Friendly Grid. You have a mute button.”
or
" Welcome to Neverworld the Friendly Grid where you may have to mute your fellow residents"
or perhaps as almost happened in my case:
" Neverworld the Friendly Grid (we let you away with murder just keep paying you'll see)"

The bottom line has to be this:

If you claim friendliness you automatically accept a duty of care to all users. and paying doesn't excuse unfriendliness. Community standards you claim must be enforced swiftly and across all tiers of membership and extend to visitors. I was told my abuser hadn't broken any TOS. I guess there is no actual TOS beyond the owner's mood. Yes you guessed it my abuser is a friend of the owner.

My final advice to anyone looking for a new home...lift the carpets before you decide.

I won't see a resolution to this issue or see Virtual again but that doesn't mean you can't learn from my experience.

I would like to explain, why it is better to use animesh instead of NPC. If you just need one or 4 NPCs on your sim then it is not really important to read this. But if you want to have a population on your sim like I have on Big City Life with 400 moving people then it is very relevant.
NPCs take a lot of performance of a sim. It is very resource heavy like the land itself (because of physics) or Avis. Animesh people you can calculate like trees you pant on your sim.
Many still believe you can't do much with animesh. Just put some animation in it to move or dance a bit. But that's not really true. We all know the animesh horses of Roland Francis and what you can do with it. It is similar with all other. Here a video to demonstrate that you can even have sex with it and let them walk around.

Usually everyone would use NPC for this. There is one advantage for NPCs, of course, because you can sit them on moving vehicles. But this is the only advantage of NPCs. My Jockeys at the horse race track are also NPCs. There is no easy other way to solve this with animesh Jockeys on the horses.
But for all other things you can easily use animesh people. If you need help for scripting stuff then you just need to ask any AI LLM today. They are already that good that they can script for you in OSSL a script to get all working what you want the animesh do.
For building good looking animesh people it is recommended to use the Ruth or Roth body as root prim and add all other to this body. It has just to be rigged. All stuff you attach to the body has to be rigged. Even if you want to let an Animesh man or woman ride a bicycle then the bike has to be rigged and you put in the matching animation with a route script. Very easy to do. All handmade.
But since newer times you have already really good option to let AI create your animesh. I don't talk about complicated routines you connect your LLM with Blender through Python script or such. There is now very easy solution everyone can do on a website. This is called Meshy AI.
Meshy creates your animesh just by telling him through text. You get first 4 examples as Statue and you choose the best you like. Then you can even give the AI an image to create texture for this figure. But you can let the AI decide what texture is the best. Just give him some hints what it should have. That's all. Then you can let meshy rig the animesh man or woman or monster or animal or whatever you want to have. Meshy knows usually where to rig at arms and legs etc. But for this the statue should be symmetric. You can also rig unsymmetric but then you have to edit a bit by yourself. Usually you get symmetric statue anyway and then every kid can create a rigged statue as animesh. Download this as blender file or any other file and put it in blender to convert it in dae file. Then upload this dae file and you have a new animesh inworld. Just put in the animation script with animation and it moves. We have in opensim now an expert for creating animesh with meshy AI. Ask Prince Amor. He is creating every day tons of new animesh for opensim. And all created with AI. Usually he is showing off his new creation now as Avi on Lbsa. Yes you can also use all this as Avatar too. The complexity is very low compared to usual Avis or NPCs.

Another word on ZetaWorlds due to a recent discussion on OSW.

I decided to move Stark to ZetaWorlds some time ago for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, I wanted a professional grid hosted by IT professionals who know what they're doing, because I don't want to mess around with all the technical stuff. I just want to build and have fun. So I'm willing to pay for a sim if I get a stable and reliable service in return.
Secondly, if I have to pay for the service, I want to know who is behind the grid. I would never transfer money to an anonymous person. I have no problem with transferring my real data so that the company, which is registered in the commercial register, can issue flawless invoices.
Thirdly, I live in Germany. As a German, I feel better if I can use a German service like ZetaWorlds, which has to adhere to the legal requirements of my country.

In the discussions about grids and how this is handled with hypergrid access, I think they are comparing apples with oranges. A commercial, professionally operated grid has higher challenges to overcome and is obliged to guarantee a flawless service to its paying customers. In contrast, the operator of a private grid, often hosted on his own PC, can do whatever he wants. If it breaks down at some point, that's just the way it is. The tenants are simply out of luck. With a commercial grid, I can demand the service by law. These are two completely different things that are often forgotten.

The other day my boyfriend picked me up from the Point Loma police station and asked what had happened and why my face was all bruised. I told him I was riding my bike too fast, lost control, hit the hot dog stand hard, and fell face-first into a jar of mayonnaise. But I don't think he believed me. Why?

How it works
Grid Owner: Drops a texture and the Station Script into any object.
Station Script: Automatically finds the UUID of the texture they dropped.
Book Script: Listens on a secret channel. When the traveler touches a station, the book receives the UUID and applies it to the next empty cube (1-30).
Please drop Your grid Stamp into a Object Along with the script and make sure the ( running )is checked. It is set to not run right now as is.
Once we Get 30 grid or regions to participate I will Release The Hypergrid Passport For All To Come to your region and explore and collect a stamp. Not many people know this, but I underwent major surgery on January 16 and am still recovering. That is why you have not been seeing me in-world as much lately.

I kept this mostly private, but I realize that doing so may have left some of you wondering, especially those visiting my shopping regions and waiting longer than usual for responses. I apologize for the delays and appreciate your patience.

The surgery was successful, but healing has been slower than I hoped, and rebuilding my energy has been a challenge. I am doing my best and gradually increasing my time online. I check Facebook and Discord daily, so those are the best ways to reach me for now rather than in-world messages.

I have many projects on hold that I am looking forward to resuming. I am adding new content to the store and will make an announcement as soon as everything is fully ready.

If you visit the shop and an item is not set for sale, it simply means it still needs final work. Please do not request early copies. I do not have the energy to rush custom requests at this time. Once items are ready, they will be available. In the meantime, there is plenty of original content available now.

Now that you know what has been going on, I would deeply appreciate your prayers, chants, healing thoughts, or whatever form of good energy you practice. It has been a difficult season, but I am improving each day. I miss being in-world with you all and look forward to returning more fully soon.

To all those who can script or who would know where to find a script I need help. I would like to find a script that can check that several items have been placed into a container like a box or bag. Is there anything like that about and where could I get a copy pls?

How sad has it become if a closed grid starts making avatars on other (our) grids, and contact renters on our grid to come there.

Unfortunately renters of our grid were contacted and were promised free land if they would join.

I haven't had access to my computer since June 20th. I was hospitalized for a week and since I was discharged I have been crashing at besties.

That means no access to my hanheld discord, handheld yahoo mail or that fb. I have had my virtualverse app on my phone, at least. I just now realized that this account is tied to my Harper Gmail and did a reset.

So, I'm not sure when I'll be home again. One week? Two?

I doubt anyone's noticed (I’ve been scarce as it is) but if anyone asks, I haven’t kicked the bucket yet (though w/ 3 ER visits in June alone it’s been a near thing!)

Ok... just looked through some of the recent front page posts. I've been here in Open Sim for about nine months now.

I have accounts in OSgrid and Kitely.

I'll have to admit a good deal of my wardrobe is possibly copybotted. I'd like to know if anyone is willing to send me a list of LM's showing truly original, OS based stuff (aside from Lunaria), I'd appreciate it. Most of my wardrobe is rigged to the Athena body. I also have a small number of Ruth2 takes. For my male alts (yes, I have a few, using the same names that I established for them in SL), I use Adonis and Roth2.

There was a discussion recently that influenced me to write this post. It's located below the post from Luna Lunaria, #92052. I totally understand creators desiring to be compensated for their creations. I have spent a fair amount of L$ to gather some of my clothes in SL. I wouldn't mind paying a few K$ or O$ for some creations on this side of the metaverse, as I think that's quite fair.

A REQUEST, not a plea for: Opensimulator to unfreeze XEngine development. I refuse Microsoft; My servers run Linux. I remember the M$ three E's: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish; used to crush rivals. I truly believe they are still playing 'the long game' and nobody can convince me otherwise. I have regions I've been building for years that YEngine's stricter, ternary-breaking syntax will damage. I understand the pitch: YEngine tracks LSL spec syntax more closely, which helps people port scripts over from Second Life. Fine reasoning for new content. Not much comfort for those of us with years of working state built on the assumptions the 'proven and tested' XEngine let us make, assumptions the 0.9.3.0 release now discards completely, since XEngine is dropped there entirely, along with Mono support in favor of .NET 8. My NEXT donation comes when I see some love for the MONO branch. I am not rich but I am not talking petty cash either. Presently, I'm documenting the journey of coding chaos in a world that's ever-adapting. It would be pleasing to report that backward compatibility matters to somebody in the development pipeline. The correct eyes will accept or reject: I personally benefit from this either way. Use that as you will. Peace & Love.

Ces derniers temps, le réel a progressivement pris le dessus sur le virtuel. Les événements de la vie nous laissent moins de temps pour créer, faire évoluer le monde, proposer du contenu et continuer à faire vivre cet univers comme il le mériterait.

À cela s’ajoute une perte de motivation liée à de nombreuses attaques et blocages venant de grandes grilles, sans raisons que nous ayons jugées valables. Retrouver dans le virtuel ce que l’on subit déjà dans le réel finit par vider le sens même de la démarche. Cela devient un simple doublon, sans valeur ajoutée.
Et puis, il faut aussi accepter une vérité simple : tout a une fin.

Why not?
Because Putin is afraid that if ukraine gets into nato as a full member they will put a nato base in ukraine. This is about 200 miles from moscow. An ICBM could be at moscow before they could knock it down. Putin is afraid and feels cornered, and like any rabid dog, He will bite. Because Putin is insane, he can and will use Nukes on ukraine if pressed too far. Like if he feels certain He is going to lose with his troops (and let's face it, he's not losing with his troops.) But say he was losing with his troops, He would definitely use nukes. This is why Ukraine cannot win this war. So now what? Do you think we should keep pouring money into a bottomless pit or seek peace? If we do not seek peace, more and more of ukraine will fall until Russia has control of it anyway. (Like what is happening now.) I say give him the land he wants of ukraine so that he at least has a chance in minutes to knock down the ICBMS so he is no longer afraid. If you don't do this, He will kill everyone anyway. Do you see now?

We are in Opensim to step away from the real-life grid for a bit, not to have it tossed in our faces soon as we open OSW. Opensim is an escape, and while I am here, I could care two fucks who you voted for or where you live. We are from Opensim. Leave your RL hate in the RL world, where it belongs. 

I've created a new group to show solidarity with anti-fascism and opposition to other hate groups and individuals. No heavy deal, you don't have to do anything to show your solidarity other than joining the group, and maybe, if you feel you can, displaying the logo on your region or in your club to show that hate groups and anyone associated with them are not welcome.

Obviously those who want to get a little more involved are more than welcome to do so, such as arranging events with a prominent anti-fascist message, even if it's only displaying the logo on promotional materials, to much more ambitious things such as art displays that highlight the dangers of the extreme-right.

To remove all doubt, fascists and their fellow-travellers, (Trumpists, Faragists, Lepenists etc are not welcome! Prospective members are vetted and are subject to approval, which means it's a safe space for the wary.

This isn't a political group, so you won't be bombarded with ideology, it's simply a group for those of us who share a similar belief, that all humans are worthy. I'll even go so far as to say that members should leave both their politics and their religion at the door, whilst anti-fascism is a political stance, it is one that crosses political boundaries. We don't even have to like each other to show solidarity, a point worth remembering.

I wanted to clarify my stance as a rebel. To me a rebel is ANYONE who takes a stand for freedom, without government, corporate, or any movements/associations/organizations controlling those freedoms of speech, livelyhood, happiness, or actions that do not harm, or endanger the freedoms, or life of others. We ALL have a right to disagree with others, and to even voice our opinions, but ultimately? How someone lives, what they do is their own personal choice, and right, and must be respected, and treated as such. I disagree with many things, but respect what others believe, and feel. Yah I pray. I believe in God, Jesus, and our Constitution. That is simply my personal beliefs. I respect anyones choices, beliefs, and opinions as their own, and their right. Who can you recommend as someone you think should be listened to and taken seriously? In other words, who has earned your respect? Try to think of not only those friends who share your views on things, but also those people who do not. (But please! Don't say which person is which, because Yikes!)

Our dear Luna Lunaria has passed. Rather than only mourn her, which we all do in our own ways, let us band together and show Luna's real life family...just how much she meant to us.

The Amazing Device. Have you ever backed up oars for a long period of time, lost several of the original, but hey that's ok! You've got the more recent ones! But then you discover a horrible secret. When you move an item, the exact same item is still in the same spot, so you move that one, and Lo and behold, another one? I recently found that my hallmark sim known as DragonFyre had 3 copies of every object in the exact same spot. Like I had loaded an oar 3 times. Only the problem was, I hadn't done that. I had loaded one oar. The problem is that at some point long ago I must have loaded the oar on top of itself multiple times SOMEHOW....??? So now how to fix it? I've got 3 copies of every item on this sim in the exact same spot. And every oar I've saved for over 3 years has this exact same problem. So I created the amazing device. All you do is enable console commands in osslenable (for region god only). Then put this script in a box and let it run. Over time the box will move all around your sim finding those duplicated items and remove them leaving just 1 original in that exact spot. So your sim still looks the same but now there is only one copy of the item in that spot instead of 2 or more... Here's the script:

While SL embraces PBR in an attempt to embrace greater 'realism' using the increasingly creaky old technology we’re all familiar with there is a backlash among Generation Z and other younger demographics towards cutting edge gaming with hypereal graphics and an embracing of older, less graphically real aesthetics. Some of this may be down to the fashionable adoption of retro, as in the numbers buying things like typewriters and traditional film cameras, but is some of it also likely a backlash against the increasing trend for hyperrealism where it’s no longer really easy to spot something real from recorded game action.

I am not a gamer, hence there have been a few times when I’ve been watching videos purporting to be actions in the current Russo-Ukrainian war where the game graphics have been so good that they appear to be real, it’s only when one looks more intently that it becomes subtly obvious that it’s recorded game action and not footage of an actual battlfield encounter.

I’m aware of arguments that the graphics of SL/OS are ‘poor’ but I have never agreed as this is a very subjective area depending on so many different factors, such as the comparisons being made. Relative to Minecraft and Active Worlds the graphics of SL and Opensim are fantastic, but compared to a photograph or the hypereal renderings of high end computer graphics, very poor indeed. Personally I rather like the aesthetic of SL/Opensim and would argue that the aesthetics are neither good nor bad, but exactly what they are. I’m not arguing against hyperrealism for those who want it, but rather agruing that the current graphics are regarded as fine by the vast majority if those who use Opensim and SL.

This article in today’s Guardian prompted me to write the above after last week I read something about the implementation of PBR in Second Life. Sometimes maybe, less is more, and if the aesthetics of retro games are appealing to Generation Z and other demographics younger than the average found in Opensim, then maybe there is hope yet that our hobby will endure. After all, Active Worlds is now nearly in its 30th year, has a very faithful and dedicated community together with graphics that make Minecraft look good!
